It is evident that the attempt at trying to bring purely organic professional surfing to forefront as a genuine sport spectacle has come up short. The main reason for this is the fact that a set time scheduled of given events are placed on a calendar in hopes that during that window of two weeks, mother nature just might serve up her best. How many times have we tuned in to the contest held only to find that just before or after the event holding period, the waves fired. To say Mother Nature just did not cooperate is backwards. Man is the one who needs to cooperate and here is the idea.
Today, every so called pro surfer is well equipped with his or her own tag along media soldiers. The criteria is that during each month of the calendar year, the individual surfer is allowed to submit their top ten waves ridden to the WSL judging panel. The votes are tallied, the points are served, and ratings are set. In this way, the surfers are allowed to head out to the waves of their choice and catch the surf when its pumping. At the end of each month, the collection of rides can be viewed and presented in a studio environment breaking down each ride and why it was scored the way it was.
While this approach does dampen the hype of the contest scene as there would be none, it does eliminate the big costs that go with such productions but more importantly it brings out the best surfing from the best surfers.
