So I have been on STEEMIT for a short while now, I did some research and found that good, meaningful commenting can really help a newby. I have gone from a reputation of 25 to 42 in a month, and most of that has come due to proper commenting. As such, I have spent a lot of time on other people's posts. I have seen quite a few things that would drive me up the wall if I were to be the author. Below are some things that I believe you should avoid when commenting:
1 SIR: The use of the word sir to random people, most of which are anonymous, is my first pet peeve. Firstly, how do you know they are male? Secondly, sir usually implies respect for someone in a position of authority. No one on steemit is your boss or has authority over you. The term originated from the word sire, which denotes monarchy. Thirdly, some find the term offensive, as some people associate it with slavery. The word has also declined in use, so it's also kinda old school:
2 DEAR: the thought that comes to my mind when this word is used is best described by this definition: "regarded with deep affection". Here are some synonyms for dear: beloved, loved, much loved, darling, adored, cherished, precious. I am sorry, but unless your girlfriend or your wife wrote the post, I would refrain from using this word when referring to the author. Some people see it as a friendly term, but these are normally mature women that refer to a younger person whom they look up to.
3 RANDOM POSTS OF PRAISE: this does not make the author want to upvote your comment and follow you. This looks and smells like you have not read the post, and you just want to get your name out there. I have realised that steemians, especially the "older" steemians, don't like it when people display that they are in it for praise or for the money. It's more of a community thing where people can voice opinions, interact and learn from each other. A particular person posted at least 10 times on a particular post with almost exactly the same words (this is spamming):
"You have posts beautiful. I want to be followers you. I very proud of it could be pengukut you"
4 RANDOMLY STATING THAT YOU UPVOTED AND FOLLOWED A PERSON:
Again, this does not make the author want to upvote or follow you. If they were really concerned with who upvoted their post, they would click the little icon below their post to see who has upvoted them. I feel like this is a trend that new steemians see and they think it is the norm, so they also start doing this. It is kinda spreading like wildfire!
5 ALWAYS AGREEING WITH A PERSON: this is something that gets to me, especially in the science posts. Steemians are not prophets, nor are everything they say scriptural. Correct me if I am wrong, but making a good comment involves some thought on your side. We are all different, and at times we will have different opinions. It is okay to respectfully disagree, and to suggest ideas and thoughts that you have that the author might not have had.
6 NICE POST OR GREAT POST: guys, really? No comment on that one
