Have you ever wondered how the world would be if everyone showed kindness to one another? If neighbors didn't get angry over little things, but instead showed acts of kindness to one another? If countries were kind to each other instead of waging wars, destroying properties, and killing people? Kindness is a virtue, in many countries and religions.

Growing up under the watchful eyes of my parents, my mom taught me the important things in life. Of all her valuable lessons, one that stands out is the power of kindness. The woman who brought me into this world taught me that the power of kindness works like magic. Just like Aladdin had a magical lamp that granted wishes, the power of kindness also grants wishes, but not in a direct manner. "When you have the chance, be kind to those around you." This was her favorite and go-to quote, which rang in our ears every day. The power of kindness was evident in her way of life, as she showed acts of kindness to those around her. At first, my siblings and I didn't understand what it meant to be kind, but as we grew older, we understood all that mom had been teaching us.

As I've grown older and wiser, I have tried to emulate my mom's way of life, particularly in how she shows kindness to those around her. I have to say that it works like magic. Just when I feel things are about to go south, they get better. I have been in "rock bottom-like" situations, and then when I thought I would stay there for a long time, boom! I'm out. Again, the power of kindness works like magic. As I mentioned earlier, I try as much as I can to show acts of kindness wherever I go. In this post, I will talk about one that happened a few months ago.

I am a university student living far from my parents' house. I reside in a hostel outside the campus. My hostel has 65 rooms within the compound. I moved into my hostel last year, and ever since then, the hostel owner had not visited until last semester (about 2 months ago). When he came, the hostel had numerous complaints that required the attention of a plumber: broken pipes, clogged pipes, and so on. So, the landlord decided to call a plumber to work on all the rooms with faults the next day.

The next day, the plumber arrived at the hostel around 8 am. He started working immediately. According to him, the landlord did not tell him beforehand that he would be working on so many rooms, so he hadn't eaten anything before coming, thinking he would finish his work in less than 2 hours. I heard him say that he was really hungry, and unfortunately, there was no place to get food or snacks around. My room is the 42nd room in the hostel, and when he got there, it was past 3 pm. When he came inside, he looked really tired and hungry. His eyes looked tired and sunken. I was also hungry and wanted to go out to get something to eat. I asked him if he would like some bread and egg, because that was what I wanted to prepare. He said that he would be glad if I could also get some for him.

After about 30 minutes, I came back and prepared the food for him. The look on his face after he finished eating said it all; he was happy and relieved. It's important to note that you should be kind to everyone, not just your friends and family. As long as you're in a position to help, be kind to everyone and also to yourself. The plumber was starving, and I helped him get something to eat, not because I was expecting anything in return, but because kindness has already become a part of me.

After about one week, something surprising happened. My friend and I went to visit a friend who had just lost a loved one. We stayed with him until evening. It started raining, and there were no cars or bikes around. After it had stopped raining, a bike man stopped in front of us. It was the plumber. Apparently, he also worked as a bike man. He carried us to the hostel, and when we tried to pay him, he refused.

Kindness can become its own motive. We are made kind by being kind.” ― Eric Hoffer.
