Under a late afternoon sky, Arthur exited the Land Cruiser and stood close by facing north. In the distance, outlines of mountains materialized inside the binoculars. Gripping the instrument helped disguise trembling hands. Inside, his companion female guide, Angelica, switched positions to shield her partner. She sensed all was not going according to plan, so expectantly eyed his backside for any indication of positive news for their client.

The client. One of the most famous, or infamous according to whom you speak with, trophy hunters on two continents, fiercely and respectfully named "Head Master." A foreboding figure of few words, his piercing gray eyes and abrupt mannerisms gave pause for many to shudder in his presence.

Arthur's tour guide service in Namibia secured the sought-after attention of Head Master with assistance from local tribesmen. Now, his reputation hang on the procurement of another famous animal.

"We're in the middle of nowhere." Lana timidly interrupted Arthur's thoughts with a half laugh not understanding the pressure he faced and the implication of her words.

It was no laughing matter. Arthur tensed. In an equally jagged tone, his attempt at calm vanished as he pivoted toward the vehicle. "We're in the middle of somewhere. Just need to calculate the location." But he'd no idea when the trail ended.

Clouds gathered, alleviating the afternoon heat, but not his apprehension.

Both watched intently as Head Master delivered a scathing frown in their direction. He suspected the black rhino sighting a figment of the local tribe's folklore.

Arthur flinched, sensing his displeasure.

Something had to be done. Angelica took charge. "The best opportunity to glimpse the animal while feeding is the dry season. We're on point, but daylight is dwindling,"

Head Master blew out a heavy sigh with an equally heavy head shake, while wiping his forehead.

"This isn't what I was promised, the Head Master blustered. "Where are we? I suspect there is no black rhino in these parts. You've taken me for a ride. Not only my money, but my standing in the community. What do you propose in this situation? Careful, my boy with your answer. Your livelihood in this country and business may depend upon it."

How dare he threaten to ruin my reputation and business, Arthur thought, his shoulders heaving. But he must remain calm in light of the black rhino not cooperating.

"It's obvious you have no idea of the black rhino's whereabouts. What destination and game will compensate for my loss?" Head Master hissed.

Angelica to the rescue again. "How thrilling an adventure a real big-time game hunter will appreciate after exploring a site only one other sportsman of your caliber has returned from."

Arthur and Angelica gave Head Master no time to consider their proposal. Nodding in agreement of alternatives they'd discussed earlier, Arthur jumped back into the range rover.

"We'll travel downstream on the ferry across the River Of Death, so strap yourself in. There are huge crocodiles and other vicious predators waiting for us to see," Arthur responded with glee. He'd always meant to view the dreaded river. Now was the perfect time.

So South they headed where numerous herds gathered at a watering hole.

Immediately Head Master shouted, "what the hell are you talking about? Are you insane? Trying to get me killed! I demand you turn this contraption around now and return to camp! I'll have your license for this!"

Arthur's foot pressed so hard on the brake that all jerked forward. He turned and smiled.

"By all means Head Master, we'll backtrack and attempt a second shot at the black rhino appearing. Just light the way. Remember we're lost in the middle of somewhere. If you knew where you were going, you wouldn't have needed a safari guide."

"I've a mind to shoot you right here and now," Head Master blustered, his face turning beet red.

"That's your prerogative, sir. Then you'd only have Angelica, and this is her first day on the job."

Head Master froze, eventually leaned back in the range rove, pouted, then dug deep within his backpack and pulled out a pen and notepad, hoping he'd not have to write about the beast that got away.
