Process:

First I played with the skull, shaped it the way I wanted from a basic model available on TurboSquid, and textured it. I didn't really know what I was going for, so I added a cube, steps, and a door, and the picture started being cleared in my head.

I worked on the door design, trying to make it look like a futuristic high-tech security door, and textured it piece by piece. Once I was satisfied with the way it looked, I started feeling the scene, with column and volume, and texturing the main cube.

The lighting was quite a challenge because of the volume, especially to be able to see the depth and the displacement of the main cube's scifi engraving. I added probably 7 different lights to the scene, from different angles, to be able to see the most important elements while keeping the mystery and the volume to the most part of the scene.

Finally, when it was time to render the scene, and I realized than rendering a 4K x 4K scene would take me ages, I first fixed the topology of most of the scene, except the skull, then I simply decimated to keep the realistic look of it.
