Childhood memories, forgotten dreams & first victories.
Some friends and I talked about what games were a big part of our childhood in the 90's, and it made me very nostalgic of the time I was sitting around with my Gameboy Colour playing Pokémon Yellow. On the same day, I saw a post in one of PeakD's community about someone making Pokémon fan-art that looked pretty awesome, and I thought "hey I want to try and something like that as well, but using Blender!"
So first,
I modeled the Poké Ball, textured the basics of it, set it up on a plane and started thinking about the composition. The beginning thought was to make it look HUGE, like some kind of forgotten statue or temple, with a character in front of it, very small, contemplating it. Some kind of mysterious thing, basically.
But then, the whole volume/fog atmosphere and the lighting bored me, and I thought "I'm sure it's already been done a thousand times, there's nothing mysterious about it anymore". So I started digging in another direction, a more obscure and forgotten one, like something you'd have discarded under your bed. So I added some background elements, a carpet, shoes, a bed on top of it.
And of course, I was NOT satisfied with the design at all. Too bright, too dense, too simple, too boring basically. I took down the volume a notch, turned off the lights completely, designed the Poké Ball a bit further, and added a sock on top of it, to reinforce that feeling of "damn that thing has been here for AGES".
My tissue simulation/clothes did not really go the way I wanted because of the way the scene was disposed, but once in obscurity, only lighten by the lights of the Ball, it looked alright enough for me to think "ok that's good, enough for today".
So here it is again, final version of the Poké Ball under the bed!
