[Nodier began, in the preface to the 1832 edition of his work ‘Smarra or the demons of the night’, with a phrase by André Chénier, which is genuinely captivating to me: ‘from new themes we always make old verses’].
[That may be, in a way, the impression I get when I look at those incredible classicist fountains that are so abundant in gardens, parks and on the main promenades of Madrid, the city where I was born and in which I still have the privilege of living].
[There is no doubt that the sculptors also had and continue to have a poet's soul, which possibly encourages that metaphorical act of love between the mace and the chisel, under whose sparks they are managing to bring to life, with the patience of a prolonged pregnancy, no less metaphorical children of tradition, who embellish our dreams with the joyous passion of Mythology].
[These beings, who populated the ancient world of fantasy, to vanish later in the dark caverns of the collective unconscious, are today part of those emblematic places through which we like to walk and let our imagination fly, releasing the toxins that accumulate daily, product of a life that lately seems to be doomed to tension].
[At the edge of its freshness and the pleasant music of the water that flows from its pipes, we have had unforgettable conversations; we have almost whispered those words that sometimes we are ashamed to say out loud and in front of the public; we have stolen the triumph of that first kiss on the lips that has made us see the sky without having to buy a plane ticket or we have thrown a coin into the water, making a wish that generally has never been fulfilled].
[Under the sardonic laughter of mermaids and mermen, we have been enraptured by the simple act of smoking a cigar in its shade, watching life go by, thinking that after all, there is nothing new under the sun].
