Including a vast cast of compelling characters, including Cú Roí and his therian offspring, humans like Sam caught in the crossfire, Grímnir the tattooed man, Cam the drunken elf, Mark a modern day Highlander and the almost unkillable and nightmarish Barghest. Here is a tale in which people remain in mortal dispute with supernatural beings on the brink of extinction. For them all to survive this apocalyptic annihilation can they work together?
The depth and span of the story is incredible. It has almost every supernatural being you can think of. Vampires, zombies, shifters and alien like monsters called barghest, as well as many other horrific creatures makes it scary and very absorbing. With a mix of grimdark fantasy and the paranormal, and the never-ceasing, fearsome fae makes the plot quote violent at times, but it isn't violence for the sake of it and flows with the plot. The old cliche of I couldn't stop reading applies here, every chapter makes you want to read further to see what happens. The action, battle scenes, scale and descriptions are some of the best I have ever read and you find yourself truly engrossed in what's happening. It's been some time since I've read a book but feel as though I'm watching a movie in my minds eye.
Vincent Bobbe writes with a unique and powerful voice and a prose whose special charm is ageless. He masterfully evokes images and emotions that reflect the setting of this brilliant yet gruesome tale. The plot is amazing and complex, with multiple character timelines spinning around each other with dexterously woven skill that inevitably crash together in an epic final showdown that you will not forget for a long time. This is an absolutely fantastic book, different from anything I've read out there. To try and describe it is hard as it is so unique, with monsters tweaked from what you would normally expect. My best attempt would be to say: It's a cross between "Lord Of The Rings" and Clive Barker novels with a twist of "The Walking Dead", a dash of "Game of Thrones", a hint of "Highlander" meets "Conan The Barbarian" with H.P.Lovecraft on the side. It really is that good!
An intense and absorbing ride that I would love to be made into a movie.
Easily gets a 5 * rating if not higher!
