A warm and brotherly greeting to everyone in the community! A big hello and good vibes to you who are taking a few minutes to read my post today. I hope you are having an excellent day!
I arrived at the apartment door with three grocery bags squeezed into my left arm, a stiff neck, and an urgent need to drop everything on the kitchen table. With my right hand, I barely managed to fish the keyring out of my pants pocket.
There they were. The two keys to the main lock. They were identical, two drops of water made of the same worn bronze, with the same notched edge and the same brand stamped on the head. One opens the door effortlessly; the other is a useless ornament, but out of pure laziness, I’ve never removed it from the ring.
Exhausted, I didn't bother to look. I picked one of the two at random, slid it into the slot, and turned my wrist.
Stuck. Not a single millimeter.
At that moment, I couldn't help but let out a dry laugh—the kind you give when you feel like life has written a comedic script just for you.
—Never fails, I said to myself with a smile, rearranging the bags that were cutting off the circulation in my fingers. —It's a classic. If there's a 50% chance of messing up, life always makes sure to deliver the full punchline.
I pulled out the stuck key, separated the other one with my thumb, inserted it, and the lock yielded with a soft click. I walked in, dropped the bags on the table, and while pouring myself a glass of water, I stood there laughing at the irony of it all.
Last Tuesday I arrived the same way, grabbed one of the two keys, it opened on the first try, and I walked right in. A resounding success, but utterly boring. The mind doesn't throw a party for things that go right on the first attempt; it erases them from memory because they lack drama.
On the other hand, today's incident is a perfect joke. That tiny three-second stumble while juggling bags at the door is precisely the kind of silly event that memory stores in the front row, just to make us believe the universe goes out of its way to play practical jokes on us.
I drank my water, laughing at my own brain. The two keys are still just two pieces of metal with zero intention of ruining my afternoon. Probability is blind, but at least it gives us something to laugh about when our minds insist on turning an everyday joke into a conspiracy of fate.
