LA LLAMADA
Ayer me llamó mi padre,
no le pude atender;
se murió la tarde
y llegó la noche.
Volvió a llamar mi padre,
llegó la madrugada,
con ella el amanecer
trajo el canto del gallo.
Llama por tercera vez,
tomo el auricular
y escucho otra voz:
¡Tu padre ha muerto!
Era su número
pero no su voz,
yacía inerte su cuerpo,
no supe qué hacer.
THE CALL
Yesterday my father called me,
I couldn't answer;
the afternoon died
and night fell.
My father called again,
dawn arrived,
with it the sunrise
brought the rooster's crow.
He called a third time,
I picked up the receiver
and heard another voice:
Your father has died!
It was his number
but not his voice,
his body lay lifeless,
I didn't know what to do.
