"Break the bias" was the theme for this year's international women's day. The bias is just too much in the society. I don't know how it is in other parts of the continent, but it is really a serious case in Africa.
As a young girl, I grew up staying at home. Knowing that a girl needs to be indoor while the boy child, is expected to go out and play football. It is the duty of the girl child to clean, cook, wash and tidy the home. While the boy child has one duty, to eat and play.
I grew up with that consciousness. It however didn't sit down well with me. I wondered why my brother would be out while I get denied the feeling of playing just because I am a girl. I was taught to be domesticated. I am sure this was the reality of a lot of our women back in the day.
The place of the society
The society blinks an eye when a woman raises her voice. They call her rude and disrespectful. In fact when a woman comes out for a position in government, she is asked to go back home and take care of her husband and children even when they know she is competent enough to handle whatever position that is giving to her. Why is her voice disrupted? Did God even create women not to talk or partake in any position in church or the government?. I recall the likes of Deborah and Esther in the bible. Did they not lend their voices? Where they shut out of their positions simply because they are women? The answer is NO. I still imagine how even in the 21st century women are still marginalized. The society still believes that a woman's place will always remain in the kitchen. In fact I think that the way the society treat women hasn't changed a bit. It is really pathetic.
Is Equal right attainable?
Yes, equal rights is attainable. I think the very first step to achieving this , is sensitizing the females to speak up everyday. I would say this categorically that the families are the major cause of this problem. Now a lady is trained to be in the house while the boy child can move around at will. How about if the parents train both sexes to be domesticated? How about teaching both boys and girls that no gender is above any gender. And that boys and girls are equal and can achieve anything they want despite their gender.
I know that in most African homes, properties cannot be shared equally. In fact females do not own a share in their father's inheritance. Simply because it is believed that women will get married and start her life in another man's land. Is that an excuse to deny a daughter of her own father's inheritance? That shouldn't be so. A lot of things are so wrong in our society and needs to be corrected.
Can the government also put into law that positions can be held by both sexes based on their capabilities? A woman can be a president, a governor, a speaker in the house of representatives. A woman can be more and should be encouraged to show all her skills with her full chest, without any fear or favour from the male counterparts.
conclusions
Women should begin to understand that they can do more. This fight starts from the mind. When as a lady you realize that you are better, stronger, and great, you can achieve whatever you want to achieve.
Before I got married, I made a decision to be with a man who would let me live my full potential, live my dreams, and achieve my goal. Gladly, I found that man. As a lady, you have to be intentional about your spouse. Choose a partner who would drive with you to achieve your dreams. A lot of women have discarded their dreams. They have thrown their dreams in the trash because of their partners.
Women should also stop talking down on their fellow women. How do you even want the men to take us seriously when all we do as women is gossip about our fellow women, backbite and even do evil to ourselves. If we love ourselves and live in togetherness not minding the race or status in the society, then it will be a stepping stone for us.
A broom stick cannot work well alone.
Wherever you go as a lady, tell yourself that you can do it. Never let anyone disrespect you simply because you are a woman. You are not helpless. You are beautifully, wonderfully, incredibly and potentially great. Never let your dreams die because you were made for it. Stand tall at all times.
