Books like The Fourth Turning (Howe & Strauss) and The Laws of Human Nature (Greene) describe human beings as being part of cyclical generations that share certain attributes. I am part of Generation X (referred to as a Nomad generation). My particular generation as a general rule values independence and liberty over collectivism. A previous tendency towards collectivization drove us to seek more independence. This need for independence in turn drove the millennial generation into a more collectivized generation. This need to collectivize will eventually lead to more individualistic thinking and the cycle will continue.
Despite what the tendencies of our generations may be, I still believe that people should pursue the maximum amount of self-sovereignty within whatever political climate they exist in. The podcaster Jason Stapelton would say that this self-sovereignty is driven by “Wealth, Power, and Influence”. The book, The Sovereign Individual (Davidson & Rees-Mogg) really resonated with me, and I feel it accurately describes and predicts the transition that is occurring to a centralized and collectivized technocracy. Within this type of system, it is important to carve out as much independence for yourself as possible. Bitcoin, cryptocurrency, blockchain, and other decentralized technologies help enable independence in the financial realm. Hard assets such as precious metals, real estate (raw land, etc.), and Bitcoin helps to counteract the debasement of currency. Mobility of income and assets also aids in conducting jurisdictional arbitrage. That is, migrating to locations that offer the most opportunity for independence and influence over your own lives.
Human beings are social and community-driven creatures, so I realize that it is impossible to ever be fully independent or self-sovereign. That being said, one can strive to achieve more and more sovereignty in their own lives, no matter which generation they belong. For me this means creating the most amount of choice and the ability to exercise that choice. You may wish to give up your sovereignty to feel safe and secure, and that is your choice. But I will continue to fight for the ability to choose for myself and my family, and I will argue against those who choose to stand in my way. The polar opposite of sovereignty is slavery, and fear is the primary reason people relinquish their ability for self-determination.
