INTERVIEW WITH CATNIP CLOUD (KJARTAN THORKILDSEN) BY INADRM RADIO (JOSEPH CORRAO):
Joseph Corrao: What is your favorite part of the music-making process?
Kjartan Thorkildsen: My favorite part of making music is the initial stage when I start getting ideas down. This stage is usually within a day and I try to do as much as possible when an idea strikes me, and this often leads me to sit up all night and work an a song. The moment of truth is when I hear it the next day. Its either fantastic and i´ll keep working on it, or it´s boring and Ill discard it and start over again.
Joseph Corrao: Indeed! That initial spark that creates the track is one of the best feelings. I’ve been finding that it’s much more important to get as much down right away when beginning something, which, like you said, can lead to all-nighters. When composing a new piece of music, where do you like to start?
Kjartan Thorkildsen: I usually start with a piece of audio that is based on chords or melody. It can either be a sample or something I record with my guitar or a keyboard. Afterwards comes the drums and then the bass glues the melody/ chords and drums together.
Joseph Corrao: Thank you for sharing your process. I find the bit about the bass being the glue very informative as it’s something I’ve been overlooking lately. That was very informative. Why is music important to you?
Kjartan Thorkildsen: I’m a very emotional person and I often feel it’s hard to communicate what is going on inside of me with words. That is personally a big part of why I make music, it´s way more easy that way. Also listening to other music helps me amplify what emotion and energy level I want myself to be at that moment.
Joseph Corrao: Agreed! That is very well put. The experience of creating and listening to music is all emotion and energy. Are there any artists who have been inspiring you recently?
Kjartan Thorkildsen: 100 Gecs, Charli XCX, Bladee, Merkaba, SOPHIE
Joseph Corrao: Nice! I’ll have to look more into some of them, I’ve been enjoying 100 Gecs recently as well. So what’s coming next for you? What can we look forward too?
Kjartan Thorkildsen: I’m dropping several music videos and music making tutorials regarding my new EP “My Mind Inside Vacation”. I also got a lot of new songs in the works. For the EP it was just me alone on everything, but experience tells me I make a lot better music when collaborating with people. That’s why I plan my upcoming releases to include features with other people, I know so many talented people out there and we can create even more beautiful music together.
