The ad in the pet store, in addition to making me miss it, made me go inside, something I rarely do because I don't like having captive animals at home, but if the idea of placing "I sell barking cat" was to attract customers, I had succeeded.
However, once inside I realized that the only one curious seemed to have been me, because the clerk, a middle-aged woman, was reading the newspaper in a desolate place.
I looked with my eyes and in some cages there were two cats and a dog, far from each other.
I approached the cats, as a spectator does when entering those circus shows where they exhibit phenomena such as two-headed women and others, and they both ignored me, no doubt they were used to people.
-Do you like cats? -the clerk shouted at me without stopping reading.
-Yes, -I answered.
-If you have children, either of them are perfect, they are used to being petted.
I touched their cages almost hidden from her, to break the tranquility of the felines and it worked because they got up and looked at me as if stung by a bee.
I expected one of them to bark at me but was disappointed by the laziness of both, who returned in less than a minute to their previous lethargy.
I continued exploring the place, I got to the dog, a poodle, probably crossed with another breed because its face was not elongated.
I hesitated between asking for the ad but finally did.
-Which one is the one in the ad out there?
I was disappointed to think that he might have sold it by now.
The woman left the newspaper on the counter and walked over to where I was.
-That one in front of you. -he said, pointing with his finger.
I looked at the poodle again, puzzled and convinced it was not a cat.
No doubt I had fallen for a joke and even looked for a hidden camera.
She noticed and apologized.
-The dog's name is cat, that's how my son named him because he kept climbing everywhere. But he joined the army and I can't take care of him on my own, so I decided that he would be better off in another home.
I felt ridiculous, no doubt deep down she must have thought I was a fool.
-Who placed the ad?
-That was someone's idea, because I didn't do it or put it there.
Undoubtedly that someone must have been laughing at the fools who had fallen into the trap.
Or was it just me and the readers reading this lived experience?
