A lot of times "money problems" are deemed the reason why people commit suicide. The inability to financially thrive is seen as a fatal point. I mean, people jump down bridges, jump into lagoons, leave note of apology and sometimes it goes viral that the economy has become too hard to bear. The latest suicide that happened in Lagos was that of a banker who took her life and left a note. Anyone might have felt that she works in a bank and even if she wasn't paid well, she must've been paid "enough" to keep going; keep the rat race, the struggle, and hustle, going.
Some people might even feel that there are people she's financially better than and they're still trying to thrive. However, I feel that if "money problems" were the only thing that springs up suicidal tendencies, then I don't think we might even see suicide in the first place. One thing I've come to understand is that we place an invincibility on the lack of money, so much that we see it as the biggest challenge of life. While money can generally determine or influence the outlook of life, we generally underestimate the complexity and sophistication of human existence as a huge factor in how life pans out.
Most times what makes life worth living is having the mental strength to scale through life's hurdles. Suicide becomes an option when people have gotten to a level where their inner strength cannot keep their eternal demons in check anymore. It is a state where people lose their ability to fight. Life is a battle, everything we do is to conquer. Struggling to get a degree, get married, get employment, fight inferiority complex, cope with addiction, fight competition, chronic health situations, underlying conditions that are peculiar, spiritual comorbidities, and so many other things.
Some people manage to make life enjoyable for themselves, but there are people who never find a formula. There are some, whose battles were already won by their parents or wards and there are people who never stop fighting till life's end. The only time life becomes meaningful is when we're able to conquer most of the battles that are internally and externally incurred. This is when life becomes meaningful.
While one's economic and financial background might play a role in how their life can turn out, there are bigger wars that plague people that the entire wealth in life cannot solve. This is why I say life is a battle. Participating comes with challenges, sometimes some are lucky to have it better, and some others are not. This isn't to say life isn't worth living. What I'm generally trying to say is that there are wars people fight that are bigger than their endurance level, and because people have different breaking points, the moment a person breaks, it means life is meaningless.
Previously they were trying to keep the demons out, but the moment they lose that willpower to fight, it takes over their soul and their life becomes meaningless. Everyone has a breaking point. However, being faced with battles that one can mentally handle, means they won't reach their breaking point. It's that endurance level where you reach, and can go no further.
So when I hear suicide, I begin to imagine the battles that must've broken that person, it is beyond the regular thing that an average person should experience, but a lot of people have a way of tying suicide to physical exertion, financial ineptitude, and struggle. Life struggles can take away willpower, and this (willpower) is that natural endowment that a person is instinctively given.
For someone who has battled depression, life seems to suck at the lowest point, and at the highest point, it looks extremely beautiful. We can never see life from the point of view of another person and that is because we cannot fight the battles they've fought even if we have the opportunity to witness it (their battles) in virtual reality.
This is why I don't ask why people commit suicide because many things in life are beyond imagination. Experiences that are mind-bending mental and physical illnesses that are beyond the faculty. Money is just a means to make life comfortable, suicide is being too tired to even live that comfortable that money proposes to buy.
