Throughout yesterday, the network has been poor, the poorest I've had in over a year and it has continued to be worse till now. A very nasty rain has fallen as well which means that there might be no electricity for 2 to 3 days if not more. For someone who virtually spends 95% of my time online, I tailor my spending to find certain stability.
This means that I try as much as possible to maintain a constant power supply, then buy very reliable internet accessibility through a reliable network as well. In reality, spending to attain certainty means spending more, when people have the option to buy cheap, it's not like they'll not buy quality, but there's a tendency that their purchase gives them uncertainty.
They're not sure of longevity, neither are they sure of utility, but they take solace in the fact that they're not spending too much. I spend over $25 on electricity and another $22 monthly on the internet. That's a combined $47.
Worth & Its Purchasing Power
Now in other to create a vivid image of how expensive this is. I'll say it's the one-month salary of an averagely paid receptionist in a shopping mall. But then why spend when quality or certainty isn't even guaranteed? In Nigeria for example, everything is tailored to work against you.
Every day people spend in a bid to attain sustainability and durability, but even the quality they're hoping to purchase is sold to them at the rate of fake or imitation of the real deal. Marketing has eaten deep into the lives of people, making it difficult to even ascertain the qualities that make a commodity or service original.
Sometimes people spend heavily because they want to get guaranteed stability, however, money cannot guarantee 100% stability but even if it does well to guaranteed 85% then the remaining 15% will be as a result of unforeseen circumstances which even the companies providing these services cannot even control.
Paying The Price For Quality
After some time in college, in 2019, I was noticing that company that supplies my network, Etisalat has been sold and renamed 9mobile. I predicted that they wouldn't be able to maintain that quality of service to their customers. At that time, they had the most expensive but reliable internet cost, but people bought it because it was reliable even in the harshest of conditions.
However, the quality of service depreciated with time, I didn't know if it was bad management and I still don't know if it was an issue of downsizing or trying to make more money by cutting down on the quality of services. whatever it was, when the company was Etisalat, they amassed a huge customer base due to the quality of their network, people applauded them on their Facebook and Twitter pages.
The customer satisfaction was top-notch, but this eventually went down the drain, they've kept losing customer and the quality of their services has also depreciated overtime.
Wary Of Diminishing Returns?
However, I predicted this depreciation and quickly jumped ships, I didn't care if I'd spend, I just wanted quality services and that's all. Truth is, having means doesn't determine one's craving for quality, some people would rather spend everything they have to enjoy the extra or rare utility of perfection, this is me.
My insane craving to stay 100% connected, is why I spend quite well on my tools of accessibility and this is my phone and internet. However, this isn't completely possible because of the country I live in.
At the moment, my $47 expenses cannot guarantee me stability, while I'm not expecting it to do so, going 29-hours without stability is what I didn't bargain for. However, I understand that we cannot completely get stability no matter how much we spend. The rain that's fallen has caused a sort of spoilage.
In Conclusion
So, I'm experiencing poor servicing on two sides, this hardly happens, it's either one happens and the other happens another time, but of course, it's a negative coincidence we often encounter once in a while, when we're aiming to spend to derive utmost utility.
Should this discourage one from spending well enough to attain the stability and durability they crave? Of course not. At the moment, I'm experiencing low battery, while will inevitably keep away off, but technically I am already off because of my inability to gain accessibility.
In this current age where people rely on accessibility to the internet to do virtually everything, being cut off is like taking away one's extra ability to get things done. Should we begin to imagine what our lives would be with let's say 6 months outage? This feels insane... Hopefully, I'm left to imagine how spending 47$ hasn't served its desired utility.
