Hi friends, there are millions of nebulae in our galaxy, all with spectacular shapes and structures, some more beautiful than others but all equally fascinating.
When a star like our Sun reaches its end, it will discard all its outer layers sending them into space. Sometimes they acquire a form of a sphere, sometimes a double lobe, sometimes a ring or a helix. In the case of NGC 5189 an impressive planetary nebula that seen from the Earth seems to have a very symmetrical shape that resembles a letter "S". Commonly (planetary) nebulae have a spherical appearance, but the shape of NGC 5189 may be the result of multiple eruptions by the dying central star that "lives" this cloud of ionized gas. It is located about 3000 light years in the constellation of the Fly and its diameter is about 3 light years.
