The Ant Nebula is one of the most intriguing phenomena in our galaxy. With about 2 light-years in diameter, it is located 3,000 light years from our Solar System, in the constellation of Norma. It is the product of the death of a star similar to our Sun, but what has intrigued astronomers is its peculiar form. A protuberance is placed on each side of the star, which resembles an ant: one lobe forms the head, the other, the thorax.

The planetary nebula Menzel 3 is being emptied by a star similar to our Sun that is certainly round. Among the different keys is the high velocity of 1,000 kilometers per second of the gas expelled, the long structure of 1 light-year in length and the magnetism of the star visible up in the center of the nebula. One reason to closely monitor Menzel 3 is that its behavior might give us an idea of what might happen to our Sun when it begins to die or run out of fuel, in about 5 billion years.
