Today I'll share a piece I carved recently.
A 3ft baby elephant with an owl perched on it's trunk.
I will share the beginning and the end with a few cuts in between.
It began as a log cut in half vertical, to release pressure and reduce cracking/checking. You see it here with just a few cuts to get the overall shape.
In winter, I'll use the gas powered saws to take some weight off the log and wheel them inside using my trusty handcart. Here it is after a few more cuts with the battery saw. You can start seeing the elephant emerge.
Had most of the elephant carved here...except for the wrinkles..
Not long after, I carved the wrinkles and the owl..then burned the piece slightly with the torch to get at the rough edges.
Next was paint. I used a combination of airbrush then brush on acrylic paint.
It was a fun carve that resulted in a happy customer.
