Getting to Know Nature’s Purple Gem Up Close (Melastoma malabathricum)

Let me introduce you to the Senggani plant, which belongs to the Melastomataceae family, and its scientific name is Melastoma malabathricum. This particular plant is widely distributed in my area, and we can easily find it almost anywhere. It has so many benefits and interesting qualities that it is quite worth discussing in detail together here. Perhaps some people are still unfamiliar with the appearance of its leaves, but I believe many people must have seen its flowers, either in person or through social media.
Its leaves are dark green in color with an elongated shape. They look quite similar to the leaves of many other plants, and at first glance, there seems to be nothing particularly interesting about them. However, let’s look at them from a different perspective. Senggani leaves can be used as a natural remedy that may help with various health problems, such as relieving diarrhea and helping to stop bleeding from minor wounds. So, this particular plant is actually very useful.
The population of this plant is widely spread throughout my area, but not many people know about its functions and benefits. Perhaps we should take a closer look at some of the interesting parts of this plant, so that its presence can become more meaningful and stand out.
This particular plant is also covered with fine hairs, even along its small stems. However, we don't need to worry because these hairs are harmless and do not cause any itching.
And this is the flower bud, which is still tightly closed. We can easily identify it because it has a hairy or scaly surface and a distinctive tip structure. This plant can also grow to a height of around 0.5 to 1.5 meters. It is not particularly large, but it can cause serious problems if it grows in large numbers.
And this is the true beauty of this particular plant. Once the flower blooms, it becomes completely light purple. Even though this is a wild plant, its beauty can give off a luxurious impression and it would also be very suitable for cultivation.
Actually, the Senggani flower is relatively large in size, so it is not particularly suitable for capturing its beauty with a macro lens. However, there is nothing wrong with taking a closer look at it.
This is one of the flowers that produces nectar, making it very popular among pollinating insects such as bees, butterflies, and beetles.From up close, we can see it more clearly—the light purple petals and the yellow stamens.
Usually, each flower has around 5 to 7 yellow stamens, and these stamens play an important role in producing pollen.
