The Medjay of Siwa
Our story begins in the great Siwa Oasis in Ancient Egypt 49 B.C.E. You are Bayek of Siwa, a great and respected Medjay. The Medjay are Pharaohic protectors of the realm, great and noble warriors, and you one of their greatest. You are honor bound to serve the Pharaoh, Ptolemy XIII. Your beautiful wife Aya and your young and intrepid son Khemu live a simple life in the Oasis, simple but happy. On this particular day the Pharaoh has come to Siwa. Everyone is out to view the spectacle of his arrival. As you watch the procession pass by you notice macabre men in masks accompanying Ptolemy. And they notice you.
Order of the Ancients
One year later you stand bruised and bleeding over a cowering man. That man is Rudjek, ruler of Saqqara Nome, but you now know him as the Heron. The name he identifies with as a member of a dark and secret sect of would be Egyptian rulers, the Order of Ancients. Rudjek recognizes you as the Medjay from Siwa. He pleads with you I thought the Medjay were supposed to protect the Pharaoh. You bellow out I am Medjay to no Pharaoh! He tells you they will hunt you down and find you even in your sleep. Sleep you ask him? I never sleep, I just wait in the shadows. And I will kill you all. Everyone who sniffed the air that day in Siwa! And with that you plunge a dagger through his skull. His death marks the first of many to come.
You track down another member of the Order of Ancients, Medunaun, the Ibis. He remained in Siwa after that fateful day a year ago and positioned himself as a local priest. You defeat him in combat and before he dies he claims the vault will give us the power of the gods. What is one boy? One boy you scream. One boy! Your mind rushes and a whirlwind of emotions grip you. You remember that day so long ago as if it were yesterday. A hot summer day in the Oasis, teaching your son Khemu how to hunt and use a bow. It was such a beautiful day. Until an armed soldier, holding one of Khemu’s friend’s captive, called to you. Not willing to risk the safety of the children you sent Khemu home before following the soldier into an ambush.
A Father’s Grief
The soldiers overpowered you and knocked you unconscious. You awoke to find a masked man standing over you and your hands bound behind your back. The mask he wore was the same as those worn by the strange men riding with Ptolemy. Deep inside the old ruins at the heart of Siwa he led you. To a great chamber that held an unlockable door. The other men in masks awaited your arrival. And they held your son. You begged and pleaded the five men to release him. One of them revealed a golden orb and told you it was required to open the vault. They believed as Medjay of Siwa you must have known some legend or clue to explain its use. But you’ve never seen this vault or the orb before today and have no earthly idea what they are asking.
A commotion in the upper chambers drew their attention long enough for Khemu to steal a knife and hand it to you. As the masked men turned their attention back to you, one of them threatened to cut the heart from the boy if you couldn’t open the vault. You continued biding time and pleading with him while cutting yourself free. Suddenly you sprung to your feet and attack them. You overpowered one of the men and stabbed at his throat. Insidiously he shifted his weight and slithered around you. You lost you footing and as you tumbled forward the blade pierced Khemu’s heart. In horror and desperation, you sat and watched the life spill from his body. You crumpled to the ground clutching your sons body as the men beat you unconscious, leaving you for dead.
Home No More
The memory of that day explodes a fury inside of you and in a fit of rage you bludgeon the Ibis to death with the golden orb he presented you in the chamber that day. Now, two of the five men responsible for your son’s death have died at your hand. Your wife Aya has already left Siwa and now you must too. There is nothing left for you in the oasis. Your wife has left, your son departed. Siwa is home no more, just a graveyard of poisoned memories. Three names remain on your list. Three members of the Order of Ancients. Three men you have sworn vengeance upon. For now, you travel east to Alexandria to meet up with Aya and to hunt down those three men.
