You make a number of good points - you know this is fiction - what you are saying about the character in the story is true to an extent but he wants to change, to get outside himself and do something for others - that's why he's trying to go undercover and help out at the Downtown Mission. He's actually a good guy who has lost his way and is trying to find himself again. Thanks for your response.
