If war is organized insanity, then we're at war with the military bureaucracy, the real shadow government controlling our lives.
Who in their right mind would even think of cloning an alien or creating an alien-human hybrid just to see how another species might think?
We attribute that kind of mad science to alien experiments on abductees and then dismiss it as a bizarre delusion or wild conspiracy theory invented by grifters who want to feed off that prurient interest.
We don't imagine the government would seriously consider such a thing, if aliens really did exist and if they were actually capable of such an act.
Well, it turns out, that's exactly what Lise is telling me.
My thoughts are whirling so fast I feel dizzy.
"You know what, Lise? I can't get past the fact aliens are a real thing and now you're telling me that after 50 years of the government studying this specimen that you helped them decode the genome? Why would you even do that?
She stares at me, her face sober and voice flat.
"They assured me they needed to know the genetic makeup of an alien for defence reasons. The government believed the aliens were concealing the hybrids so we wouldn't know their secret plan--to infiltrate the human race and gradually guide our evolution."
I looked at her as if she were new.
"C'mon Lise, how could you possibly fall for that lie? You know evolution isn't abrupt--it takes place over millennia, sometimes over millions of years."
"They've been here that long. They have a long term plan to gradually assimilate us. I know it sounds crazy, but I saw the hybrid and that helped me decode the alien DNA. They're altering our DNA to make us less aggressive and changing other aspects of our personality and intelligence so we can conform to their ways."
I stared out the window at arctic blackness as deep and impenetrable as the furthest reaches of outer space.
"If what they're telling you is true, they already know the alien DNA, so what do you think the government is planning to do to?"
"I think I figured it out. They want to use in vitro fertilization to produce a hybrid embryo and plant it in a surrogate's womb."
"To what end?" I rasped hoarsely.
"They must be wanting to study the hybrid and either be able to find a way to prevent further gene tampering with the human genome or they want to alter the alien DNA for their own purposes by experimenting on a living subject. Either way, it's nefarious and unethical."
I shook my head sadly. "You're completely right about the unethical aspects of this plan, but the question is--how do we stop it?
