Arriving just in time for Christmas 2017 is Gary Oldman's portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour.
With a career in tinseltown spanning over three decades, Oldman proves yet again why he should be considered amongst the greats in Hollywood cinematic history. Oldman's performance of The British Bulldog, a nickname first given to Churchill by the Russians due to his ferociousness and focus, is stellar and well deserving of an Oscar. Throughout the course of the film, Oldman dives heart first into bringing this iconic character back to life, and to the forefront of the mainstream. Churchill like any other, was no doubt a flawed man, but was exactly what Britain needed at that very pivotal moment in it's history. The politicians didn't want to consider naming Churchill as their new leader, but in spite of their efforts, Churchill was called upon to replace Neville Chamberlain as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. The film begins as Churchill enters into his new position, and continues to tell the story of how he navigated through the most uncertain of times while enduring a multitude of doubts and fears that hovered over his every decision. Clocking in at just over two hours, the film while certainly low on action, in fact it's almost entirely non-existent, makes up for in it's beautifully acted retelling of history. I would highly recommend this movie to any Churchill or WW2 enthusiast. If you see it, I'd love to know what you thought in the comments section.
