A DVD can generally only copy roughly 10% of a VHS tape as it relates to translating raw analog video to digital. A one hour VHS tape can translate into 100 GB on a computer.

Dear Gemini
I want to understand how analog translates into digital as it relates to my VHS tapes being copied into say a MKV file and/or other formats that might be the most non-compressed meaning as is fully. On one hand, from a digital perspective, we already talked about how a one hour video can be compressed down to like 4 GB. It makes sense that digitally speaking, a 480p video file would obviously be smaller than a 1080p video. If you do the math, 480p means less pixels per frame. One of the challenges is how analog video translates into digital video, I mean assuming analog has no pixels. My biggest question for you right now might be how the bitrate element affects the file size. It would seem that the bitrate could not be adjusted, that the bitrate would simply be binary meaning on or off meaning either you get it completely or you do not. But it seems we have already talked about the limit of how much data can stream through USB 2.0 say for example. It seems that analog video is a lot bigger than digital video because analog is not stored in like the digital binary code of zeros and ones (like say 0101000011101010101 say for example for binary code) meaning analog is tougher to summarize as it might include subtle nuance as it might not have exact pixels so to speak and the coloring of said pixels (even as analog is said to not really have a digital pixel system) may be nuance and tougher to translate into binary code. I want you to outline how uncompressed raw analog is translated into digital, it seems that analog cameras captured a lot onto the ribbon or film part of the VHS tape meaning it captures like photo negatives for each frame and each frame could hold a value of say 2 MB per frame which can add up if it is 30 frames per second. I scan many photos and things, I prefer to scan into a PNG format, my scans are often around 2 MB and can sometimes be over 10 MB depending on how many pixels. The VHS camcorder recorded moving pictures directly to the VHS, so it is a question of how many kilobytes, megabytes, or even gigabytes each VHS film frame is worth in the most uncompressed raw like PNG or TIFF or whatever form. With file formats like PNG, a photo file can be a lot bigger than say JPEG. We talked already about compromise where software and hardware can take shortcuts or find ways to make the video file smaller. JPEG is one example. It seems to me that if one is truly copying raw analog, that the bitrate will be a lot higher than if one is copying using software or hardware that might compress or whatever else as to translate it into something smaller. I want to understand the details of all of this stuff that we have been talking about, I want a general outline of the numbers, math, science, details, especially as it relates to the digital value and worth for each pixel and frame of a truly raw uncompressed as-is original unaltered fully-streaming video from the ribbon or film in a VHS cassette tape recorded via a camcorder. I am not as concerned with the audio aspect to the raw video from VHS but I imagine the audio aspect would probably be much smaller than the video portion in a VHS.

480i 4:3 aspect ratio
480 lines vertical
720 lines horizontal
59.94 fields per second at 29.97 fps
Camcorder: diagonal magnetic tracks onto the moving tape ribbon

Lines: 525 vertical, 330 horizontal
NTSC (ITU-R BT.601)
FPS: Frames Per Second: 29.97 fps (technically 59.94 fields per second interlaced)
720x480 pixels: 345,600 pixels per frame
240 to 330 vertical lines
Color Depth: YUV 4:2:2: Allocates an average of 2 bytes (16 bits) of data for every pixel to capture luminance (brightness) and chrominance (color differences).
Bytes Per Frame: $720 \times 480 \times 2 = 691,200 \text{ bytes}$ ($\approx \mathbf{691 \text{ KB per frame}}$).
Bytes Per Second: $691,200 \text{ bytes} \times 29.97 \approx 20,715,264 \text{ bytes per second}$ ($\approx \mathbf{20.7 \text{ Megabytes per second}}$).
$20.7 \text{ MB/s} \times 60 \text{ seconds} = 1,242 \text{ MB}$ per minute.$1,242 \text{ MB/min} \times 60 \text{ minutes} = 74,520 \text{ MB}$ per hour ($\approx \mathbf{74.5 \text{ Gigabytes per hour}}$).
How many horizontal lines?

Dear Gemini
Outline how accurate MacroSilicon MS210x might be as it translates on the fly. Also, tell me why you said the raw VHS video would translate to 480i and not to say 360i, is it due to how data is recorded to the VHS film meaning it is recorded in an interlaced fashion with two fields. You said 240 to 330 vertical lines but how many horizontal lines? Why did you say 240 to 330, does the number of lines fluctuate based on what is recorded to the film per frame and pixel for the video aspect of the VHS and does the audio alter the lines? Did you say the 240 to 330 lines is translated to a 720x480 digital grid and why would it be 480i and not say 330i, 360i, or say perhaps even double 330i being like 690i or other numbers? Are you saying the analog is technically 59.94 fields (AKA interlaced analog frames) per second exactly or on average basically? You mentioned the black blinking intervals, does that mean every other frame or field is partly or completely black, would that mean roughly half of the video and/or roughly half of the roughly 75 GB per hour of video and/or roughly half of the roughly 165 Mbps bitrate is this black blinking intervals? Try to estimate the percentage of similarity raw VHS video might be to a digital counterpart filtered via the MacroSilicon MS210x. Specifically, some of my home videos were made by me, my family, friends, and others, some of the videos is just us talking or walking around in the yard next to our trailer. Does the blinking interval only affect how a VCR reads the VHS, how a TV displays the VHS on the screen, and/or how the camcorder actually captures raw video to the VHS in the first place? Tell me the total how many lines horizontally and vertically for video on VHS. Would a full complete raw analog video stream from VHS translate digitally to 720x480 interlaced at 59.94 frames per second which is a full value of 165 Mbps for the bitrate, is that the general outline for translating analog VHS to digital? Vertically, you said 480 to 486 of the total 525 lines contains active picture which would mean 6 lines are lost or can all 486 or 525 lines be copied somehow? Horizontally, you said 240 to 330 lines potentially but then you also said digitally it is up to 720 lines? But wouldn't 720 be more like for wide screens and not the typical square TVs many people had in the 1990s? I want to know the exact aspect and ratio those camcorders recorded video to VHS, is it safe to say they did not record at a 16:9 aspect and/or can the aspect be adjusted by say the VCR, the TV, the computer, etc, or what did the camcorder originally do when recording to VHS, I want an outline of what is technically recorded to the film in the VHS by the camcorder originally. It is tough to summarize how this six-hour-long video was made, most or all of it came from DVDs which came from VHS. It is tough to summarize the sequences of which parts might be more direct copies from DVD from VHS and which might be more indirect copies of copies of copies kind of thing say for example. A wide variety of things may have happened as videos were sometimes copied and recopied to and from VHS camcorders, VCRs, DVDs, hard drives, and the Internet. Assume all of the videos from this six hour compilation came from various DVDs from various DVD recording machines copied mostly between the years of like 2003 to 2023, assume all or most of the DVD machines were made before like 2010, assume the DVDs were copies of a wide variety if VHS tapes which came from different VCRs and camcorders. With all of that said, do your best to compare this six hour video I sent you (which came from DVDs) to the MS210x device we talked about earlier. Assume the VHS original is 100%, estimate what percentage the DVDs may have been, the MKV version on hard drives, the YouTube version of the VHS, and also the percentage of if the VHS was copied to my laptop via the MS210x device. Mostly try to compare the DVD copy to MS210x, give the best outline regarding percentages as it relates to each pixel, frame, color, video, etc. Talk more about differences between the MS210x's blur vs DVD hard blocking as it relates especially to fast movement videos, outline the two to help me see the pros and cons of blurring and blocking, talk about the similarities and differences these two might have with each other, outline pros and cons that blocking and blurring might have as it relates to trying to archive VHS videos as is to preserve the VHS while minimizing loss of video quality, color, pixels, frames, fields, movement, clarity, contrast, color depth, etc. List products that can copy VHS film to digital. Look for all types of products and not just VCR machines but also special machines that allow for putting the VHS film ribbon out of the video cassette casing and into a different form if needed to be better digested. Look for machines that might be able to slowly digest film at different speeds to minimize data loss by processing the film at different speeds for archiving as opposed to simply the normal playback speed. Compare the Panasonic AG-1980 to 4-head VCRs and to all other ways to read VHS directly, outline pros, cons, similarities, differences, relating to debates regarding the best machines, products, and all ways to play VHS tapes. Outline debates relating to the desire to play VHS through HDMI to my Ubuntu ASUS FX505DT laptop which has 32GB of dual-channel DDR4 2400MHz memory, NVMe SDD: ADATA SWORDFISH, 960 TBW, AMD Ryzen 7 3750H with Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx × 8 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650/PCIe/SSE2, 64 bits motherboard architecture, Ubuntu Mate 22.04 OS. Kernel Linux 5.15.0-56-generic x86_64, two USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A (or USB 3.2 Gen 1) ports, it has CPU and GPU. But as it relates to what I am trying to do, the debate might includes the question of if HDMI might maybe upscale, downscale, and/or any issues that HDMI might have relating to trying to stream VHS to my laptop while minimizing changing the VHS, the video, the audio video sync, the pixels, frames, bitrate, color depth, contrast, clarity, lines, details, fast movements, etc. My laptop has one ethernet port, only 3 total USB ports, a power port, a head phone port, and my laptop only has one HDMI output port. I do not know if it is possible to hack a HDMI port to make it an HDMI input. Therefore, I would probably have to convert HDMI to USB. Outline this HDMI debate to help me see pros, cons, similarities, differences, as it relates to HDMI vs all of my other options of copying VHS to MKV. Give me the best case scenario vs worse case scenario regarding the best to worse VCRs and all VHS players that might output a video stream via HDMI, estimate and outline percentages of what the HDMI might stream of the VHS, see if any might stream 480i as opposed to only forcing upscaling. I do not mind to upscale depending on how HDMI upscale might compare with DVD copies of my VHS tapes, MacroSilicon MS210x USB Dongle copies, and all other options. For this, assume I had a computer or something that could accept HDMI input because I just want to evaluate the HDMI output process from VHS to evaluate all of the pros, cons, similarities, differences, as it relates to all HDMI output options that might be out there. Another question would be to compare HDMI output to other cords, cables, including the S-video cords, the RCA red white yellow cords, coaxial cables, outline similarities, differences, pros, cons, look at what percentage of the stream signal of the VHS might be loss depending on the various cords, cables, HDMI, etc. See what advantages HDMI might have if another output option might be somehow worse regardless of how bad HDMI might be, it is a question of which options has the highest probabilities of being worse or better depending on a wide variety of factors, situations, details, etc. Now compare especially the S-video which might retain up to 92% of the VHS quality with other options like the best and worse VCR DVD combo machines. Study the six hour long YouTube video I sent you above. Outline all of my options. I already uploaded that video above. But evaluate all of my options. I currently have VHS tapes, DVDs, and video files. In other words, my videos are on those three mediums being VHS, DVD, and HDD/SSD files. Outline the pros, cons, similarities, differences, advantages, disadvantages, best case scenarios, worse case scenarios, percentages of how much might be gained and lost, look at all of my options, look at everything we have ever talked about and then some, try to outline all options, start with whatever options has the highest probability of being the best or better including the six hour long YouTube video I already sent you which came from files which came from DVD which came from VHS, do your best to rank all options from best to worse. Outline Hollywood VHS and DVD movies as it relates to the debate here regarding my quest to copy VHS to MKV, outline how professional movies may have been copied to VHS and DVD, compare my project with professional movies, outline what percentage of a video quality might be lost or altered as it is copied to VHS or DVD, look at how professional movies are copied to mediums, see how they compare with my content. Outline all of my options of what I can do right now starting with whatever has the highest probability of preserving the VHS as is. Look at all of the options we talked about which might include VCRs, VCR DVD combos, DVD machines, USB dongles, HDMI, other machines, cables, products, etc. You estimated the VHS may have degraded 15% which might be the better option if DVD copies is 35% degraded. Assuming that is true, you can begin with VHS options first before exploring other options. Do your best to outline top best options first with everything we have ever talked about in mind. Outline my Magnavox DV220MW9. Compare that to my Panasonic DMR-EZ48V Diga VHS DVD combo which also has a DVD priority S-Video output, HDMI AV out, VHF UHF RF coaxial out, and a digital PCM optical audio out. This combo made in October 2008. Outline my options. Look at various steps. The first steps involves playing the VHS somehow. We already talked about VCR machines and various means of reading VHS. A second step might involve ways to convert the VHS playback either internally inside the VCR (or other machines) or externally via a middle agent being other VCRs, DVD players, other devices, USB dongles, and/or various adapters, machines, converters, and/or whatever the options might be. With this second step which might be optional perhaps depending on many things, there might be a debate as to whether this second option might help depending on what the third and fourth and additional steps might be. So, a third step might be to copy the VHS say to various machines and/or directly to computers or other options. There might even be a debate on if it might help to copy an old VHS first to a new VHS before attempting to copy it to other formats/mediums. This third step might be the final step depending on what the step includes. But if the third option involves a VCR, then there might be an additional fourth step. Look different sequences of steps as it relates to my goals for this project, outline all of the pros, cons, similarities, differences, as it relates to different routes, different recipes of steps, outline different steps of options starting with plans with the highest probability of copying the highest percentage assuming the VHS is 100%.

Interlaced odd and even fields

Here is an example of some of my home videos. The following is six hours, it is a collection of videos that were put into one long video. You may see a wide variety of things from these six hours:
