Because of its long ocean trek, the cards have already been dealt for the immediate coast and low-lying bay, and creek areas. Everyone must continue to listen to their local officials and get out it you are under a storm surge warning. As far as areas not under a surge warning but still under a hurricane warning, 110mph sustained winds and 130mph are not anything to sneeze at. Imagine an EF2 tornado, but not one that lasts a few seconds to a minute, but one that lasts hours on end.
After the shoreline action plays out, we begin to shift focus on the secondary and just as important danger of Florence, flash flooding. When her bands move inland at a terribly slow pace, she will dump 20-30"+ of rain for those who see the heaviest precip. Not many places can handle this type of deluge and we will see widespread, life threatening, flash flooding. For inland spots, it is not too late to leave. If you know your area floods out during a regular rainy day or bad thunderstorm, get out. Again, be guided by your local officials as to where to go and if your area is in danger of flooding.
Please do not be fooled by the downgrade in strength to this storm. Areas of the coast will still see catastrophic, Category 4-like hurricane damage. Areas who see the strongest winds will still sustain very heavy damage. Areas who get the heaviest bands of rain will still see widespread flooding.
Stay tuned.
