Death as a rest when life is overwhelming and painful, strong start for this post my people but as sure and faithful as our breathing. Before anything else I want to greet you hoping you are very well, blessed in health.
As I told you before death should not be taken as the end of life, in some cases it could be the end but of a suffering or agony when a terminal illness knocks on our doors. Certainly it is hard for the relatives and for the patients to see how life is slowly slipping away from their hands, as a doctor once told me, "these patients are like a candle's end, at any moment it can be extinguished".
I tell you this because this past week I was attending some patients, both in terminal stages of the disease, one with leukemia and the other with Alzheimer's, both with almost the same physical condition from the point of view of the disease.
I was more moved by the lady with leukemia, usually I try to arrive at the patients' house with joy and enthusiasm to transmit to them, she always received me with a smile and saying better and better, however yesterday when it was her last dose of medication (morphine) her reception was different, she was quiet, she did not respond to my jokes, she only asked everyone to leave the room that she needed to talk alone with me.
Once alone, she simply told me that she could not stand it any longer, that I should please help her, that she could not stand another day like this and much less see her families suffer trying to sow false hopes, she knew that she would not get out of bed, the pain is getting stronger and stronger, Her body is without energy, even breathing hurts, in all that conversation she asked me something for her, maybe it was a quick but not easy way out, an escape from all that suffering, "José help me, give me something to rest, to give me eternal sleep".
That request left me speechless, I just took her hand, wiped her tears, hugged her and told her "in that I can't help you, under my religious vision, only God, gives and takes life, you are still here for a purpose". Her words, full of pain, shocked me and made me think, is it fair that this lady is like this, going through such a hard situation.
If we place ourselves on the side of the family members, who obviously never want their patients to leave, even though they are in bed with some ailment, they always have the hope deep down that they will get out of this situation. I am one of those who think that patients are done until they breathe, after that only God takes control. But why should someone's last days be in suffering or agony, where pain is present as a faithful companion waiting until the last moment, slowly consuming all the breath of life. How I would like our last days to be happy with loved ones transmitting all the love possible, so that their memory is thus a happy one.
On the other hand, there is my other patient in the same terminal phase, she has Alzheimer's where she only has basic functions of life, we could think that she does not suffer so much because she is not aware of what she is going through or what her relatives are going through when they see her like that, she no longer speaks, does not eat normally, does not move, only breathes and moves her eyes with a lost, empty look, she does not know who she is, nor where she is, but as I told you the pain and suffering are there. When she rotates from place to place a moan of pain is heard, everything hurts, everything tires her, her skin is very injured.
In particular I could say that I would not like to go through a situation like this, where you are slowly consumed and little by little your life goes away, with the inevitable company of pain, I have always considered that as children of God that we are, he gives us life and takes it away. But because it is a constant that in our last days, there is pain and suffering, is that it is the way to pay for mistakes made which we must pay before leaving this life, then it would apply to say that we are the product of our actions, the well-known free will, most likely God suffers with us and is there transmitting comfort to our families and patients, this is a personal view based on my religious beliefs.
Many people very close to me, either by work or family circumstances have gone through this situation, and I wonder what bad thing they could have done in the course of their lives to make their last days so sad and painful or is that part of life, like the happy moments we live. In any case, only God has the answer to all that.
It only remains for me to ask my God to somehow intercede for us and make us true instruments for good and allow us an end of our life in peace and comfort to the family members, with the hope of a better place.
Happy and blessed day in love, health and peace.
