When I was just a little boy of seven, my parents took my younger sister and me to spend part of our vacation in a mountainous area. One day, around 3:00 PM, my sister (who was about four years old at the time) and I were playing under a tree outside the property when suddenly a medium-sized snake fell from the branches right next to us. I vaguely remember that my first impulse was to run away, and I also remember the terrified scream my sister let out when she realized how close the reptile was, almost at her feet. After that, my next memory is limited to the image of my red plastic boots (which I called "my Sandokan boots," like the main character's from a mid-70s TV show) covered in blood, lying on the head and front end of the snake's body. The snake lay crushed and disfigured, its tail still writhing furiously...

When my parents arrived at the scene, alerted by my sister's screams, as they later told me, I was in shock and saying very strange things. When my mother, looking me in the eyes and holding me by the shoulders, asked me what had happened, I could only manage to reply, "It was Chambault, he killed the snake"... This alarmed my mother, a practicing Catholic and school teacher, who already knew of the existence of "Chambault" as my imaginary friend, who seemed like a kind of hooded monk, not very tall, and not very good-humored, even rude, although always willing to take care of me (as I had told them months before). While all this was happening, my father, a huge, bohemian, cheerful, and witty fellow, and 16 years older than my mother, was busy finishing off the snake. As he did so, he laughed and said to my mother, "Chambault, good heavens, this boy is almost as crazy as your father was!" (It was the 70s; I suppose in those days calling a child "crazy" wasn't as controversial as it is now.) But the truth is, from that day until his death, my father jokingly used to call me "Chambault" whenever he saw me in a bad mood (which wasn't infrequent, I admit)...

After that incident with the snake, and a few visits to therapists, some scoldings from my mother (it was the mid-70s, remember), and even a visit to a parish priest to talk about "Chambault," obviously my imaginary friend disappeared... Or did he?... Because nowadays, when I take photos in which I express my need to vent (like these I'm sharing with you today), and even let slip some impulsiveness and barely channeled anger; that "Chambault" who more than once I understood as a rather complex kind of "alter ego," seems to be around, and from time to time I say to myself: "Chambault took this photo"...

驴O acaso no fue as铆?...
