I was supposed to wake up early today, drink a cup of delicious steaming coffee, grab my camera, and go for a long walk down some country road. After all, I finished my pending assignments yesterday afternoon, and this morning I was going to be completely free of commitments. But things don't always go as planned. And today, instead of getting up early, I stayed in bed a bit longer, and then woke up in a truly terrible mood. Depression and the resulting bipolar disorder have haunted me since my youth. For a while, I was even medicated for it. But over the years, I learned to battle these monsters through meditation, yoga, and hobbies like photography. That's how these "episodes" gradually lost their intensity and became less and less frequent. However, like today, for example, I have days when I simply feel like the world is collapsing beneath my feet. But I've also learned to manage these moments more or less efficiently. I even feel like I've found a kind of "self" from which I can simply observe and handle this with relative ease. And thanks to this, today, in the midst of the "emotional void" this creates, I decided to grab my camera, look out my bedroom window, which faces the street, and simply take some photos (I know this is something that immediately starts to make me feel better). And the funniest thing of all was that, in one of those shots, a man appeared riding by on a motorcycle and it was quite well in focus. So I decided to go out into the streets instead of the countryside and take photos there...

And that's how I spent a couple of hours in the streets. Taking photographs almost instinctively, though with a certain anger, even impulsively, as if trying to drain that always inexplicable feeling of sadness that seemed to seep into my veins. Because that's what depression is like; it comes without reason, it doesn't give explanations, the brain simply starts screaming at the top of its lungs that life has no purpose... At least that's how it happens to me when serotonin seems to have fled far from my body... In fact, I got home after taking a lot of very different photos. This is always like therapy; it doesn't always completely relieve me, but at least it helps me start climbing out of the pit these episodes plunge me into...

And I confess I was about to delete all these photos I took today, because my intention was simply to go out and try to feel better so I could start living the day. But when I got home, I sat on a bench in our dining room and started looking at the photos on my camera's screen. Then I began to like them, because the way they were captured spoke volumes about how I was feeling that day. So I simply went to my little studio, sat down in front of my PC, and started downloading the camera's memory to my hard drives. Then I dedicated myself to processing and editing these photos, and that was the second dose of this therapy which, fortunately, ended up banishing the ghosts of depression once again, the kind that never gives any warning before it arrives...
