Montalbán (Carabobo, Venezuela) is a town of cracked streets, untidy spaces, and, frequently, visually anarchic elements. But it is not just that; in addition to its dampness and decaying facades, Montalbán is also a complex town where you cannot simply stand by watching and not wish to understand its streets and social entanglements. Years ago, I decided to take advantage of all this to do street photography and thus learn how to deal with the obvious complications faced here by us...

Montalbán (Carabobo, Venezuela) es un pueblo de grietas en las calles, de espacios desprolijos y, con frecuencia, visualmente anárquicos. Pero no solo eso: además de sus humedades y fachadas decayendo, Montalbán es también un pueblo complejo en donde no puedes quedarte simplemente observando y no desear entender sus calles y sus entreveros sociales. Yo, hace ya años, decidí aprovechar todo esto para hacer fotografías callejeras y aprender así cómo lidiar con las evidentes complicaciones enfrentadas aquí por nosotros...

This is a town of past memories, usually built on the perception of a bygone prosperity, which has already reached the status of legend for the purpose of the popular anecdotes that emerge spontaneously from the mouth of any middle-aged inhabitant here. It is also a town of former illustrious characters who positively marked local, regional, and even national events. Although there is also a general perception that people like them have no longer appeared in recent years. So the town, just as my photos tell it, lives rather on the joys of its long-gone past and on hopes based on a long-awaited future, which seems to never want to finally arrive...

Este es un pueblo de memorias pasadas, usualmente construidas en la percepción de una bonanza antaña, la cual ya ha alcanzado la categoría de leyenda para efectos del anecdotario popular que emerge espontáneo de la boca de cualquier habitante de edad mediana aquí. Es también un pueblo de antiguos personajes ilustres quienes marcaron de forma positiva el acontecer local, regional e incluso nacional. Aunque también hay la percepción general de que ya no aparecen personas como esas en años recientes. Así que el pueblo, tal como mis fotos lo cuentan, vive más bien de las alegrías de su pasado ya lejano y de las esperanzas basadas en un futuro largamente esperado, el cual parece nunca querer llegar finalmente...

My father arrived here in the late 1960s with almost 40 years of age and having already lived in several places around the country and even outside it. But, my father used to say when we sat down to talk, as soon as he arrived in Montalbán, he understood how strange and psychologically challenging this town could be, even comparing it, half seriously, half jokingly, to the "Macondo" of Gabriel García Márquez's novels. My father married my mother, who is a native of the town and descends from families that founded it; he lived here for half a century until he died close to reaching his 90s. But a few days before exhaling his last breath, he told me something like: "You face this town in three ways: either you understand it and stay, or you hate it and leave, or you simply sleep here and spend your days elsewhere, so that the town doesn't disturb you and occupy your mind...

Mi padre llegó aquí a finales de los años 60 del siglo pasado con casi 40 años de edad y ya habiendo vivido en varios lugares del país e incluso fuera de este. Pero, contaba mi padre cuando nos sentábamos a conversar, apenas llegó a Montalbán entendió cuán extraño y psicológicamente desafiante podía ser este pueblo, llegándolo incluso a comparar, medio en serio, medio en broma, con el «Macondo» de las novelas de Gabriel García Márquez. Mi padre se casó con mi madre, quien es nativa del pueblo y desciende de familias que lo fundaron, vivió aquí medio siglo hasta que murió cerca de cumplir sus 90 años. Pero pocos días antes de exhalar su último suspiro me dijo algo así como: «A este pueblo lo afrontas de tres maneras: o lo entiendes y te quedas, o lo odias y te largas, o simplemente duermes aquí y pasas los días en otra parte, para que el pueblo no te perturbe y te ocupe el pensamiento...»

Be that as it may, I think I belong to the group that stays and understands the town, even coming to enjoy it. So, perhaps I will end my days being here in its streets shooting photos in the middle of this strange watering hole of stories that seem to mutate with every foggy morning and every crack in the streets...

And by the way, this publication is called "ABSOLUTIONS" because I remember completing that comment of my father's with something like: "Yes, but Montalbán also absolves you; it doesn't hold grudges whether you stay, or you leave, or you simply come here just to sleep"...

Sea como sea, creo que yo soy del grupo de los que se quedan y entienden al pueblo, llegando incluso a disfrutarlo. Así que quizás terminaré mis días estando aquí en sus calles, disparando fotos en medio de este abrevadero extraño de historias que parecen ir mutando con cada mañana de niebla y cada grieta en las calles...

Y por cierto, esta publicación se llama «ABSOLUCIONES» porque yo recuerdo haber completado aquel comentario de mi padre con algo como: «Sí, pero Montalbán también te absuelve; no guarda rencores si te quedas, si te vas o si simplemente vienes solo a dormir aquí»...

They were then exported to JGP format on which minor modifications such as straightening and adding watermarks were carried out using PhotoScape v3.7}
