Exploring The Railway Diesel Locomotive Wokshop In Our City : A Journey Through History
I explored a British period structure in our area. Although it's located in our area, we have never had the opportunity to enter this establishment before. But a younger brother of mine works in the railways, and with his help, I had the opportunity to visit and photograph these British establishments.
These establishments are now operated under Bangladesh Railways. It is a railway diesel shop. I have never seen such a railway diesel shop spread over a large area anywhere else in our country. The atmosphere inside the diesel shop is very excellent. The diesel shop was designed as planned.
The buildings inside the diesel shop are impressive to look at. Because they are built in British style. I was amazed by the structure of the main building. It was Majestic. The main building is located in the middle of the diesel shop. Many other mechanical works are done here including engine repair.
There is a huge oil tank. Many skilled officers work in railway diesel workshops. Apprentices here work under skilled officers and day by day they are also becoming proficient in many tasks. Towards the end of the diesel shop area are some more buildings. These buildings look very old.
Many stories and history are hidden behind such old structures. Most of it is unknown to us. Because after the partition of the country, no specific history of these has been recorded for people to know, I think. But those who have been working here for many years or those who are very old know a lot about these establishments.
This diesel workshop was formerly a steam railway workshop. Because earlier there were no diesel-powered locomotives. Earlier, British officials controlled this loco shed from another town located nearby. As technology advanced, the steam railway workshop was converted into a diesel locomotive workshop when diesel-powered trains started coming to the subcontinent.
Because diesel locomotives required maintenance, repair, and testing. As the steam locomotives were to become obsolete, it was necessary to bring about changes in this workshop. According to the information received, there are currently 11 sections in this workshop. Among them are the Truck Section, Motor Section, Power Assembly, Electric Schedule, Mechanical Repair Section, etc.
This workshop is best for repairing locomotives. Locomotives are dismantled and repaired. A locomotive has various components. Another section deals with one component. This workshop has a special arrangement which is not available anywhere else in our country. That is, here the wheels of the locomotive can be turned by a machine without opening the wheels of the locomotive while the locomotive is moving.
There is a memorial at the diesel workshop. The monument is an engine. This engine is imported from Hungary. It is a 3309 series engine. Besides, there is another monument built with the help of various parts. This diesel railway workshop is an important establishment in Bangladesh that continues to contribute a lot to our railway sector. You can visit this workshop once you are in Parbatipur city.
