Today I would like to talk about going wide in the death splinter. When I think about the death splinter, I think about low mana cap battles.
In my experience these cards are some of the most impactful that you can pick up for your death splinter deck.

  1. Venari Bonesmith
As pictured above the Bonesmith comes with the life leech ability starting at level 1. At first glance this monster looks like a slightly more expensive Life Sapper. At level 1 that's pretty much a correct assessment, but at level 1 the Bonesmith does come with 1 extra health. If you face a near mirror match and your opponent pairs Thaddius Brood with Death elemental on their back line. The death elemental shoots down the Life Sapper before it has a chance to start sapping life. Life Sapper is great too. I actually like to use both Venari Bonesmith and Life Sapper on a regular basis, but I'll put Bonesmith in front.

  2. Queen of Crows

As a whole, the cards from Riftwatchers are probably the most impactful you can have for the going the distance ruleset. If you're playing going the distance and playing the death splinter. I would use a level 1 Contessa over a level 4 Thaddius and I almost always use Queen of Crows as my tank. it's 2 more mana than Gargoya Devil and lasts way longer. When you're able to start leveling up this queen the other abilities are also on point for going the distance.

  1. Raa

While I usually think of the death splinter for low mana cap battles it can be great with a higher mana cap too. To get the most out of your death splinter with a high mana cap it helps to pick up some bigger monsters. Raa is the perfect example and deals a whopping 6 damage under normal circumstances. Did I mention that Raa flys. I like to use brighton bloom or another dragon summoner for most earthquake rulesets, but the death splinter also has some terrific options.

  1. The Gorlodon

The Gorlodon is another great option when you're using the death splinter with a higher mana cap.

Other great death splinter cards to consider adding to your collection in no particular order include:
Harklaw
Animated Corpse
Arachne Thug
Zintar Mortalis
Haunted Spirit
Owster Rotwell
Cabalist
Phantom Soldier
Shadowy Presence
Magi Necrosi
Weirding Warrior
Phantom Soldier, and
Ancient Lich

When picking out new cards to buy or even rent, it's important to consider whether you'll be playing in modern or wild format. Some of the cards that I've mentioned are not options in the modern format. I left off most of the "ghost cards" because I expect that pretty much all of my readers will be familiar with these and almost all of them are worth playing on a fairly regular basis.

I would love to hear what some of your favorite cards are from the earth splinter and any stories about cards that seem to always beat you.
