Everyone says that a good movie is one of the surest ways to calm one’s restless nerves and coupled with the fact that I haven’t completed a movie in a while (I say completed because most times I start but can’t bring myself to finish it), I decided to watch a movie from the long list of movies that have been in my phone these past months. And so, I picked this movie. I saw three ladies holding guns, and I was all for it.
Sisters(2023)
Sisters is an hour and thirty minutes movie whose genres are mostly suspense and drama. It was released in August 2023 and was directed and written by Jahmar Hill. It stars known actors like Cocoa Brown and Columbus Short and is a majorly African-American production.
Summary of the Movie
The movie begins with Diamond’s grandma who just wakes up from a frightful dream where her granddaughter, Diamond shoots someone. She fails to reveal this dream to Diamond and chooses to keep it to herself. She’s portrayed as a religious woman who dotes exceedingly on her grandchildren, Tia, Tara and their closest cousin, Diamond, and has raised them after their mothers passed away at a young age.
Diamond, the protagonist seems not to have a job at the moment but suddenly works out a way to get a job as a cleaner. She practices boxing with her best friend, who is not unexpectedly in love with her, Kevin. Her cousins Tia and Tara are a hairstylist and a police officer respectively. They seem to always be bickering about something and their grandma fears that they’d never be united as sisters that they are.
Things take a dramatic turn for the family when Grandma finds herself diagnosed with cancer. The funds needed to cure her is about a hundred thousand dollars and the sisters find themselves in a fix on how to pay the money, beginning with the deposit of $10k, of which failure to do so would result in their Grandmother being kicked out of the hospital.
Out of undying love and fear for her Grandma’s life, Diamond finds a way to blackmail a cheating husband and gets the deposit needed using a gun she took from her workplace. From one feat to another, including the sneaky ways of a possessive boyfriend, Diamond seeks to make it work for herself and her family. Can they go against the odds to save themselves after everything they’ve done?
Review and Rating
I’m not sure where I’m going to start. The movie seemed nice in the beginning. I loved how natural Diamond was with her Grandmother. Their roles in the movie were interpreted flawlessly and for the brief moment before everything turned upside down for me in the movie, I felt like I had picked a good movie choice.
I can’t directly pinpoint where the switch happened but I noticed that from the beginning, bits and pieces of the movie seemed to be missing. It felt like they were showing some bits and leaving the others for us to guess and soon enough it became too much.
From when Diamond got the gun from her workplace which wasn’t stated how it got there in the first place to the so-called robbery that got her the deposit money, to when she robbed a hundred million dollars from a gangster Korean, and to what happened after she mobilised some women, her sisters included, to rob someone of a million dollars.
Everything felt forced and all over the place and frankly, I found myself having a bit of a headache soon enough. There were lapses in the end too when it all blew up in their faces and when the movie was eventually over, I kept fast-forwarding and going back, wondering what I missed and what exactly happened.
The reason I was somewhat pumped about watching this film was because of the presence of Cocoa Brown and Columbus Short who I think are pretty good actors. But when they were unceremoniously killed in the movie, I just knew then that the entire movie lacked the basic essence that makes a movie mid, let alone good.
I’ve never seen a film directed by Jahmar Hill so this was a sad first impression for me. Off the bat, I would say that this is a waste of time to watch but maybe if you checked it out, you’ll pass the judgement yourself. Sisters has a 4.1/10 rating from me.
