It was something that I’d hoped would be over so when I picked up this brilliant book by Nora Roberts to read(I’ll do a review on it in my next post), I thought to myself that reading Nora’s books is the best way to get out of my book-block once and for all. I want to believe that my reluctance in finishing stems from the pile of schoolwork I usually have to sort out, but I’m beginning to feel it’s not that since this is already the third day since opening the book and I’ve barely gone past the fifth chapter.
Usually, what helps me in situations like these is to paw through older books, which are, captivating books that I’ve read before and from there, work my way towards getting back into that book space. But it looks as if that’s not working. I did enjoy a few books though. A lot of them are African, like Amma Darko’s Faceless and Last Days of Forcados Highschool. These are books that I loved a lot when I was younger and characterised my childhood.
When my attempts to get back into my reading seemed futile, I decided to move out of the book sphere and do something else. I tried seeing a film. I’ve got lots of series piled up in my phone to watch but I’ve never gotten around to watching them. Again, maybe because of school, but mostly because movies are not my first choice when it comes to hobbies. I mean I love them, but I wouldn’t immediately turn to them if I was bored.
However, the main thing that usually took away my boredom was against me so I had to find substitutes that would take my mind off. So when I got bored watching a few series, I decided to try another thing, which is talking to people. I wouldn’t exactly say I’ve been anti-people these past weeks but I think how I’ve been feeling is kind of close. I’m very much a people person but many things have come in the way these past months that make me question how true that statement is.
Since I didn’t have a lot of time to even be sociable, I spoke to a friend I hadn’t talked to in a while. She’s one of my very closest friends and had been trying to reach out, but my jam-packed schedule and hers didn’t allow that. So, I reached out, we talked and I felt considerably lighter afterwards. I didn’t want to push my luck by jumping into a book to read immediately and instead, opted to laze around and try my hands on some new colour apps I downloaded.
All of these, I tried between yesterday and today. I ended today by staying outside. Not listening to music or doing any of the normal things I would do. Just sit outside and zone out of my thoughts. I kept my head blank and simply listened to the soft purr of the wind and the chirping of birds as they made their way back to their nests with the approaching sunset.
And now, I’m writing about my experiences because this is more or less my final step to liberating myself from this book block. Especially with the weekend approaching. I plan to read and complete at least two books this weekend. So, I’m doing my best to clear all hindrances and pave the way for that to be possible.
Either way, the end will justify the means. Hopefully, before a full week elapses I’d have had my share of delicious books to share with my fellow book-lovers I’m this wonderful community. I hope everyone stays safe and remains happy this weekend. Bye.
