This event took place over the weekend of October 17th and 18th, and it stands as the largest convention dedicated to Asian culture held in Venezuela this year. As you may know, I’m not a die-hard fan of the entire universe surrounding anime, manga, or K-pop; however, I’ve always kept an eye on the details, and I’ve learned a great deal thanks to my brother, the person who took me there that weekend. It wasn’t quite like it was 20 years ago, when I used to take photos with everyone in cosplay, but the venue held many surprises that have since become fond memories worth sharing.

As you can see in the first image, the gathering took place at the Lider Shopping Center in the Sucre Municipality of Miranda, part of the greater Caracas area. It was wonderful to return there after so many years, though I must admit that my brother and I felt it wasn’t the best venue for an event of such scale. It was very crowded and the space was limited; however, given that the event featured so many characters who transport us back to our childhood and adolescence, we didn’t really notice the discomfort at the time and simply enjoyed our day.

We didn’t attend both days; we only went on Sunday the 18th. The person we most wanted to see was voice actor Mario Castañeda, best known as the voice of Goku, and he stole the show the moment he stepped onto the stage. He is one of the most entertaining people I have ever seen live; not only because of his brilliance and his ability to voice so many characters that have left a lasting, joyful impression on us, but also because he turned out to be a fantastic performer. The hour he spent in front of us was worth every second...

Another big surprise on Sunday was the presence of Steven John Ward, a South African actor who, within the Comic-Con sphere, is best known for playing Dracule Mihawk in Netflix’s live-action One Piece. He didn’t generate quite the same buzz as Mario Castañeda, partly because he is "just" an actor, whereas Castañeda has voiced a wide variety of characters both within and beyond the world of anime. Also, John spoke exclusively in English, and, honestly, it’s just not the same seeing him out of costume, haha! Still, he managed to draw a crowd; my brother and I even stopped to listen for a while.

There were many activities that Sunday afternoon, but the ones I enjoyed most were definitely the open karaoke (even though I didn’t sing) and the presentation by Young Friki Cosplay. I also have to mention that my brother was here in the capital; it had been a long time since we’d spent any time together or had the chance to have some of those deeper, long-overdue conversations. These days, One Piece seems to be what everyone loves, though Goku remains the true king, but I still managed to find others who love Saint Seiya just as much as I do; some of us even wore T-shirts to help us spot one another. There was also someone cosplaying as Saori Kido, the goddess Athena, walking around the venue. There really is something for everyone! ❤️
