Many things have changed in our lives since the double earthquake on June 24th of this year, and when I say "our lives," I am referring especially to those of us living in the affected areas of Venezuela. This #TBT is from a month ago; it captures one of the few post-earthquake activities I’ve taken part in with some of my coworkers. The city's recovery has coincided with our collective vacation period in August, yet our workplace has still required a great deal of assistance. Since the office is located in downtown Caracas, and I live there too, it hasn't been any trouble at all for me to help out however I can; and, just between us, I’ve really enjoyed the move I’m writing about on my blog today.
Muchas cosas han cambiado en nuestras vidas luego del doblete sísmico del 24 de Junio de este año, y cuando digo "nuestras vidas", me refiero especialmente a las personas que vivimos en las áreas afectadas de Venezuela. Este #TBT es de hace un mes, es una de las pocas actividades post-terremotos que he realizado junto a algunas personas del trabajo. La recuperación de la ciudad ha coincidido con nuestras vacaciones colectivas de Agosto, pero de igual modo ha hecho falta mucha ayuda en nuestra institución, y como queda en el centro de Caracas, y yo vivo en el centro de Caracas, pues no me ha costado ni un poco ayudar en lo que pueda, y aquí entre nos, he disfrutado mucho la mudanza de la que hoy les vengo a escribir en mi blog.
It is already September, and rehearsals are supposed to begin in just over two weeks; however, I’ll let you in on an open secret: the rehearsal rooms and concert halls aren't ready yet. They sustained significant damage, and repairs have taken longer than expected. That said, a month ago, the choral music department was assigned this new administrative space to house our archives and management offices. Naturally, upon seeing so much empty space, our director, the manager, and those of us in the choir who live nearby decided to set up and outfit the place to serve as a backup rehearsal venue, just in case the main headquarters remains closed. This building belongs to the Vinicio Adames Foundation; although the earthquakes knocked everything over inside, broke a couple of windows, and shook loose some of the wall cladding, the facility is 100% operational, all that’s needed now are volunteers to get it ready for our group.
Ya estamos en Septiembre, en poco más de dos semanas deberían comenzar los ensayos, pero los confieso un secreto a voces, las salas de ensayo y la salas de conciertos aún no están listas, sufrieron muchos daños y veo que se ha llevado más tiempo de la cuenta repararlas, pero hace un mes, al menos al departamento de música coral, nos asignaron este nuevo espacio administrativo, para que funcionen nuestros archivos y nuestra gerencia, pero por supuesto que al ver tantos espacios vacíos, nuestra directora, la gerente y los coralistas que vivimos en la zona decidimos ambientar y acomodar el lugar para tener un respaldo para nuestros ensayos en caso de que la sede principal siga cerrada. Esta casa es la Fundación Vinicio Adames, y aunque los terremotos tumbaron todo dentro de ella, partió un par de ventanas y sacudió parte del revestimiento de las paredes, este lugar está 100% operativo, y solo hace falta voluntarios para que esté acto para nuestra agrupación.
There are many great things about this August reunion that happens voluntarily every week. First, there’s the feeling of contributing to something good, something that will ultimately benefit us in the long run. Second, it’s about continuing to strengthen bonds with the people I’m working with here; believe me, the vibe among us is amazing. As the saying goes, the right people are here, and that makes the work much more comfortable. I’ve learned a lot about the choir’s history during these recent get-togethers with the teacher while we organize the archives. Scores, recordings, concert programs from both inside and outside Venezuela, it’s all fascinating. And, well, you know I take photos wherever I go, something the director and manager love about me, so we snapped some group shots for our own records. I also haven't forgotten that the choir is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2026. It’s a shame the year didn’t get off to a great start, but I think there’s still a lot we can do. The facilities aren't quite ready yet; in fact, I haven't been able to attend for the last two weeks due to other commitments, so I’m looking forward to seeing the changes the team has made when I get back 🤭
Hay muchas cosas buenas en este reencuentro de Agosto que se da voluntariamente cada semana. Primero, el sentir que contribuyes a algo bueno y que a largo plazo nos traerá beneficios a nosotros mismos, y lo segundo es seguir fortaleciendo lazos con los chicos que estamos trabajando aquí, que créanme que somos súper buena vibra todos. Como dicen por ahí, estamos los que tenemos que estar, y eso hace más cómodo el trabajo. Hay muchas cosas que no conocía de la propia historia de la coral, y la he ido aprendiendo en estos días de encuentros junto a la profesora mientras organizamos los archivos. Partituras, discos, programas de mano de conciertos dentro y fuera de Venezuela, es súper interesante, y bueno, ya saben que donde voy tomo fotografías, algo que la directora y la gerente aman de mí, así que nos tomamos unas fotos grupales estos días para nuestros propios archivos. No olvido que este 2026, la coral está cumpliendo 20 años, qué lástima que el año no comenzó con buen pie, pero creo que hay mucho que podemos hacer aún. Estas instalaciones no están listas aún, de hecho estas últimas dos semanas no he podido asistir por otros compromisos, así que cuando regrese espero ver qué cambios lograron los muchachos 🤭
