Decentralization would be ideal, but can it be total? To what degree do we allow decentralization before it becomes a necessity to have a more top-down way of operating?

The advantage Meta will have over all of our metaverses is actually insane. Exploring some extreme examples is a very fun thought experiment.

Let's say Decentraland becomes the go-to metaverse in the future. Governance becomes completely decentralized, invading private spaces gets solved by NFT memberships but public spaces still remain easily exploitable.

If I was Zucc, I would simply buy out the most popular location in the game and replace the scenery with Nazi propaganda. Now everyone needs to break their brains to solve a problem they never saw coming through decentralized governance which is seemingly impossible. You can't tell me what I can or can not display on the land I own and the media has all the right to raise some serious concerns about this new thing called decentralization.

Other issues involve personal leaks and situations where we may end up sharing something private on the internet and then have that same thing used against us. You post my home address on Hive and I can't do anything about it except downvote the content. By the time I get some help the info is already out there.

I had a very interesting discussion with @makerhacks on this subject and they even wrote an article about it after the discussion.

From that exchange alone you can see that we are already divided on the way we should handle such extreme situations in the future. I believe that privacy is a right but also a responsibility while others like @makerhacks believe that centralization is the answer, which is also a valid point.

The only way to know our loopholes is to watch Zucc closely because he will be exploiting every single one of them just like CZ and the CEX gang did over the years.
