Condition: The trailing edge flaps are not in the commanded position.

Objective: To configure the airplane for landing.

  1. Choose one:
    Trailing edge flap asymmetry exists:
Go to the Trailing Edge Flap Asymmetry checklist
Trailing edge flap asymmetry does not exist:
    Go to step

  2. Choose one:
Indicated flap position is 30 or greater and less than 40:
    Land using exsting flaps.
    Go to step 3
Indicated flap position is 15 or greater and less than 30:
    Land using existing flaps.
    Go to step 5
Indicated flap position is less than 15:
    Go to step 4

3 Set VREF 30.
Note: VREF 30 + wind additive must not exceed the flap placard speed for flaps 40.
Go to step 6

  1. Plan to extend flaps to 15 using alternate flap extension.
Note: Alternate flap extension time to flaps 15 is approximately 2 minutes.
The drag penalty with the leading edge devices extended can make it impossible to rach an alternate field.

  2. Set VREF 15 or VREF ICE
Note: If any of the following conditions apply, set VREF ICE = VREF 15 + 10 knots:
Engine anti-ice will be used during landing
Wing anti-ice has been used any time during the flight
Icing conditions were encountered during the flight and the landing temperature is below 10 degrees C.
Note: When VREF ICE is needed, the wind addtive should not exceed 10 knots.
VREF 15 + wind additive, or VREF ICE + wind addtive if needed, must not exceed the flapplacard speed for the next larger flap setting.

  3. Check the Non-normal Configuration Landing Distance tables in the Performance Inflight-QRH chapter or other approved source.

There may be several reasons for the flaps not moving to the commanded position, such as a broken flap lever cable. However, a disagreement may also be caused by a malfunctioning TE Flaps Indicator or failure of the FSEU.

To exclude an indicator failure:

  • perform a visual inspection of the flaps (weather conditions permitting)
  • verify the speed tape : the bottom of the upper red and black bar (flap extended placard speed) and the adjacent yellow bar (next flap position placard speed) on the speed tape follow the actual flap setting, even with the flap indicator faulty.
  • Verify TE Flaps Indicator P6-2A and FSEU P6-2A

After Takeoff:
The objective of the NNC is to configure the airplane for landing. However, if weather conditions do not allow a return to the eparture airield with flaps 15 or you prefer to fly the airplane to the home base for maintenance, consider retracting the flaps electrically. Caution, there is no asymmetry protection!
If you elect not to retract the flaps and continue the flight to destination or to the takeoff alternate, do not rely on FMC fuel predictions. Use the actual engine fuel flow for your calculations!
