A startup called Volonaut decided to turn what we saw in Star Wars into a working prototype called the Airbike. The company released images of the vehicle flying among trees, while a pilot dressed as an Imperial Scout Trooper controls the machine with surprising stability. But behind all the cinematic flair lies an extremely serious engineering project focused on the future of personal air mobility.

Volonaut’s proposal is to develop IPTOL vehicles—electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft capable of operating as a hybrid between a motorcycle and a manned drone. There’s just one important detail here: piloting something like this in the real world is absurdly more difficult than it looks in the movies. The classic Star Wars Speeder bikes seemed light and agile, but a real flying vehicle must constantly contend with aerodynamic stability, wind gusts, weight distribution, and continuous micro-corrections to maintain balance.

So, the engineers at Volonaut took a different approach. Instead of relying solely on human skill, the Airbike uses multiple electric rotors combined with automatic stabilization systems based on flight control software; the integrated intelligence corrects pitch, altitude, and wind compensation in real time, allowing the pilot to focus more on navigation than on survival—it’s almost as if part of the flight is shared between human and algorithm.

During testing, pilots operate at relatively low, controlled altitudes—generally around 15 meters—especially in dense forest areas. The goal is still much more focused on validating stability and safety than on extreme speed.

Technologies that began as cinematic fantasies are slowly becoming real prototypes powered by batteries, artificial intelligence, and automated flight control.
