CHRIST: THE BREAD AND THE WATER OF LIFE
By nature, the soul of man, weakened by sin, is empty and famished; he needs to obtain the necessary food to satisfy his hunger. Know the right way to obtain it, but reject it. In his pride he looks for other alternatives because he thinks he is self-sufficient. You are not allowed to depend on anyone, and less on your Creator. All his efforts are almost vain, although some days he eats and others do not. It is what is said: "Bread for today and hunger for tomorrow".
This introduction could be part of the vivid portrait of those men who in their eagerness for greatness do not admit that God is behind each and every one of their achievements. They place themselves above others, overestimate themselves, and believe they are gods capable of achieving everything without the help of anyone. However, inside they feel alone, and recognize that something is missing. Their successes are not encouraging enough. Some seek balance, and others abandon themselves in their empty life where failure, neglect awaits them ... They live believing that there is no solution because in their pride they do not see beyond their nose; and they leave this world without having found what was so close. How sad!
In this comforting passage, Jesus presents himself as the food of our life; the true bread of Heaven; the bread of God that, descending from Heaven, gives life to our lives and, therefore, gives life to the world. He, evidently, is not the common bread of which we eat physically until we are satiated, but it is spiritual bread that gives life to the soul; that living bread that not only feeds the body, but gives eternal food for the eternal soul.
God the Father gives us Christ so that He may be the provider that relieves our mortal soul and nourishes our spiritual needs. In Him, in his unique work as Mediator and Priesthood, in his death and atonement, in his grace, love and power ..., in Him is everything that satisfies the needs of empty souls, because He is "the bread and water of life (John 6:35; Rev. 22:17), and living water (John 4:10) "
"If anyone eats of this bread (the flesh of Christ, which he gave for the life of the world), he will live forever" (John 6:51); "But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never thirst" (John 4:14).
Bread is a food that we need daily; it is eaten by the king, the footman or the vagabond. It is a suitable food for young and old, for strong and weak, for men, women or children, we like everyone equally. It is a highly nutritious food for the body and for our bodily health; and from which we never get tired. The application of these qualities to Christ is too obvious to require an explanation.
He is exactly the Savior who fits the needs of all classes; we need to be satisfied with his flesh, his blood, his justice, his intercession and his grace. Either we have Christ or we die in our sins. There is no other way but the true one, the one who gives life, and lives in abundance (see John 10:10).
We must go to Jesus by faith; believe in Him and put our souls in His hands. If we go in this way, Christ welcomes us and will not refuse to save all who come to Him, regardless of what has been previously. Thus, we must hold on, trust and place the full weight of salvation on Christ. When this happens, He receives us with mercy, will forgive us, and will receive us as His beloved children to give us eternal life. ("And to him that cometh to me, I will not cast him out" John 6:37)
Let us meditate on that benefit that Jesus left us with his body and his blood. Let us thank him for committing the beautiful madness of staying with us to give us his grace and his eternity; let's look at him with faith so that there are no barriers, no limits, no restrictions. In this way we will be able to satisfy our spiritual hunger, and we will find the happiness that our eagerness and selfishness do not allow us to obtain.
Christ is the answer, do not look to another side, but to Him. Look at the cross and surrender to it. Surely you will find the happiness and peace that you were looking for.
