It was such a sunny, hot day that I could barely breathe because of the humidity in the air. The sky looked completely clear and blue, so I just figured it would be another hot day like most of the days we’ve had lately. But suddenly, out of nowhere, I started hearing a pretty heavy downpour coming down on the roof, and just like that, the weather changed abruptly.
It’s just that, even though we’ve had a few showers lately, this day was different because the rain was really heavy—it felt like a storm because it just wouldn’t stop. In fact, it knocked down some branches from a guava tree I have at home. To be honest, there was a moment when I heard my cats yowling because of the noise of the rain hitting the backyard, and I got a little scared, but thankfully it wasn’t anything serious—just a really heavy downpour.
After a few hours, it stopped raining, and I had to go out to run some errands. It had already cleared up, but since it had just stopped raining, the whole atmosphere had that distinctive scent of rain; the streets were still covered with several puddles, and the tree branches were dripping one after another, but I don’t know if you’ve noticed that after it rains, the sunlight looks different—it looks brighter—and this is reflected in the puddles, which makes for a really beautiful experience.
So as I was walking, I started thinking about those motivational sayings that go, “After the storm comes the calm,” and how true that can be—because after that heavy rain, everything felt very peaceful, calm, and pleasant. The breeze, of course, was cool, and that heat that had almost suffocated us a few hours earlier had disappeared, leaving in its place a cool, pleasant climate that made the walk much more enjoyable.
Many people might not like how things look after such a heavy rain—because you have to jump over puddles or because you get wet when you walk under a branch— but the truth is that if we look a little beyond that, it’s amazing how everything looks cleaner and the heat has already dissipated from the asphalt and the pavement; you simply find yourself in such a calm and peaceful setting that you can’t help but notice the absence of the noise that was there just a little while ago.
Personally, I love the rain—I really enjoy watching it, listening to it, and everything else—but I like what comes after the rain even more, because it’s as if a whole new place appears for you to discover once it’s cleared up. This walk was full of little hops because I didn’t want to get my shoes wet—that’s true. But besides that, I really enjoyed breathing in the fresh air, feeling the breeze without any heat, and watching the sky and the clouds after they’d shed all that moisture they were carrying.
