I was recently talking with a friend about that feeling that washes over you when you reach a certain age—regrets about not having made better use of your time, about not having done more as soon as you could, and also the sense that, even though you did a lot of things, it wasn’t enough. I have to admit that I kept these thoughts—which were very much my own—to myself until I realized I wasn’t the only one who felt this way.In fact, I was really surprised to realize that even someone who, in my eyes, has achieved so much can feel the same way as someone who thinks they’ve accomplished nothing. What I learned from this conversation was that, even if we’ve worked really hard, time can pass, and seeing how quickly it’s gone can make you forget everything you’ve done.
And I know this because it’s happening to me right now. Time flies so fast, and when you’re a teenager or in early adulthood, you don’t realize it’s going to be like this. Plus, all this showing off on social media somehow distorts the way success is perceived, and makes you feel that if you don’t have what others your age have, then, in some way, you’re falling behind. That creates this strange feeling that, for some reason, you have to rush because there’s no time left.

Sometimes you can be very clear about what you want out of life and all that, and still feel affected by what the world around you somehow shows you. In my case, these last few months have been a little difficult for me because I’ve had this recurring thought that pops up out of nowhere and doesn’t go away easily—that my time is running out, and even though I’m doing so many things, I feel like I’m not doing anything. And even though I’ve often ended up sitting in a corner feeling a little sad, the truth is that I’ve also learned from this whole situation. I’ve come to understand that, even when we’ve given it our all, we may at some point experience a sense of sadness and pain over how time slips away without us even noticing. But there comes a point when you just have to stop focusing on time and focus on the present—on what you’re doing.
In my case, something that has helped me is that I try to focus on the things I love to do and enjoy so much. Being able to visualize how doing this now will benefit me in the future has allowed me, in a way, to let go of this heavy burden—the feeling that time has slipped away and there’s no way to get it back. There are so many things I can still do—even those that people have told me I can’t do anymore because of my age.

The thing is, nothing is too late, and nothing is too early either, when it’s something you truly want to achieve. In the end, society demands so much of you—things that aren’t really as important as those it has labeled as simple or basic. In a way, when you give in to those demands and let them get to you because you’re not achieving what others are, you may be setting aside an important and special part of yourself. For example, I’ve always been someone who deeply loves nature and being in remote places that aren’t so easy to reach. However, there are so many different perspectives around me on this—like the idea that you can only succeed if you’re in a highly civilized place, in a big city full of people, job opportunities, and so on. Although I respect that many people think this way, the truth is that I’ve learned over time that I’m not cut out for that—and that’s okay.
So it may be inevitable that I’ll feel down from time to time because everything around me affects me in some way, but the rest of the time I know I’ll feel happy because, at my age, I’ve achieved many things that, from my perspective, are the right ones. And even though time will keep passing, the truth is that my only job is to focus on the present and make the most of it, because that’s the only thing I can control.
