I ran out of bandwidth and could no longer post, comment, power up, etc... you have no access to the blockchain and can do nothing. I had to transfer some of my ether to steem in order to gain enough bandwidth

I agree but according to the steemit documentation this is actually by design. Dtube, and other sites ask for it and apparently it is thought to be ok as it is just the posting key which is the "lowest
