Today was a super day, I got up and had breakfast (fried eggs as well today) and then finished packing and headed off to the airport. I went and found the international arrivals information desk and within a few minutes had found some fellow Bushwise people. The group kept growing and then a guy came and walked us to the minibus. There were 16 of us and a lot of us had two bags. There was supposed to be a trailer, I’m not sure if the guy forgot to get it, or they decided we didn’t need one or what happened, but there wasn’t a trailer. It was great fun trying to get everyone and all their bags in, it was a bit of a squeeze but we managed it. After we’d all piled in, off we went.
We drove for a couple of hours and then stopped at a service station to buy some lunch. We all went back to the minibus and then the driver asked us to follow him while he showed us something. From the back of the service station we could see zebra, rhino and emu! Several animals off the list before we’d even arrived. It’s now my favourite service station ever!
We climbed back into the minibus and off we went. We carried on driving and saw a really cool waterfall, several baboons and two giraffes! Giraffes! Yes giraffes! So exciting! The scenery was absolutely stunning, so so beautiful. After not feeling quite so safe and secure in Johannesburg, I am firmly back in love with Africa!
We arrived about 1600 and were assigned to our rooms. I’m sharing with Eleanor, who is from Winchester! There is also a girl here from Hambledon! What are the chances!!??
We had a few safety briefings and introductions. They told us briefly about dangerous insects and that we should wear proper shoes and use a torch at night to avoid being bitten by scorpions, we were told about the camps resident leopard and how to make sure we stay safe from that! We were given the schedule for tomorrow (the PT session at 0430 turned out to be a joke). We were also issued our plates, cutlery and mugs and then it was time for dinner. We had chicken curry, rice, salad and sweet potatoes. It was really yummy. After dinner we were left to unpack and sort ourselves out. I read for a while and then had an early night.
