I have been watching some films from the body of work of Argentine filmmaker Eduardo Pino, and I found this particular movie—a noir—highly recommendable, as it tackles highly relevant contemporary themes. Although released in 2021, the film deals with issues that have always existed but are now manifesting with greater intensity.

On one hand, there is the theme of the price of fame. Countless people—both men and women—aspire to a dream life: becoming famous celebrities and, of course, amassing a fortune. Many women, in particular, dream of being recognized, admired, and desired, and of using that status to fund a life of luxury and pleasure. And yes, many succeed; but friends, everything in this life comes at a cost. Nothing is free; there is always a price to pay.

That is why the film portrays the dark side of fame: high-end prostitution and the world of luxury escorts. To the outside world, these women might look like actresses, but to reach the top, they must first sleep with powerful figures. At the same time, many of them—often hailing from the provinces and desperate to escape dead-end, shitty towns—are used as tools to secure benefits for those who hold power.

Sex and corruption go hand in hand. Here, the filmmaker also weaves in a plot about manipulation and power: the fabrication of fake news and scandals to divert attention, and the use of journalism as a weapon to destroy others or gain an advantage. Even someone who appears beyond reproach can make costly mistakes and ultimately be forced to sell their soul to the devil just to survive. Amidst all this, sex emerges as a tool of coercion.

The film also offers an interpretation of something very common these days: trash content, shitty content, and controversial material. When it comes to the media—and especially social media—what drives the masses to watch something is content that sparks controversy; it doesn't matter if it’s true or not—what counts is that it makes an impact, stirs up debate, or incites discussion. We see this every day on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and so on. Educational or meaningful material goes unnoticed—often buried by the algorithm itself—while content that generates debate, even if it is false or vacuous, is what people want to watch and consume. I liked how this dilemma was addressed, specifically through a television program featured in the film.

Where the film falters slightly is in its pacing; there are moments that drag or that would have benefited from greater fluidity and tension. However, despite these minor flaws, the story manages to hold one's interest from start to finish. Much of the credit goes to the three main characters and, of course, the actors who portray them.

Luis Machín embodies a journalist with a successful past who is going through a rough patch, yet retains a certain naivety in believing he can remain an idealist committed to truth and social responsibility. Martina Krasinsky plays the young woman who leaves a dead-end town to become a star in the capital—and who, ultimately, suffers the most—while Joaquín Berthold takes on the role of the wealthy, attractive man tasked with recruiting beautiful women for a VIP club where politicians, business leaders, military figures, and other prominent individuals indulge in nightlife and carnal pleasures.

An excellent Argentine film with a powerful ending. I highly recommend it: seek it out, watch it, and let me know what you think in the comments.
