[Movie] The Convert

In the 90s, when I used to go to the Charles Chapin Film Club in my city every Saturday, I saw a film that deeply affected me. It was a raw and gritty film. It was called Once Were Warriors, and it was the first time I saw a film by director Lee Tamahori, who sadly passed away last year.

The filmmaker was a New Zealander of Māori descent on one of his parents. Throughout his career, he made other productions that I enjoyed, such as Mulholland Falls and the miniseries about Hussein, The Devil's Double. He also ventured into action films, like XXX, and even directed a James Bond film with Pierce Bronan. Incidentally, I never liked Bronan as Agent 007.

I think that, since his debut film, Lee Tamahori never truly impressed me with any other film. I believe that, besides being his best work, it's unsurpassed. I still feel the same way after seeing his last film, The Convert. It's from 2023, and it's been on my watchlist ever since. I wanted to see it because the director, once again, told a story set in New Zealand. I remember seeing some positive reviews on social media when it came out.

This time, the story takes place in the 19th century, so it's a historical drama that tackles the history of a specific area and period. The plot unfolds in a fictional British settlement called Epworth. The preacher Thomas Munro arrives in this settlement to take charge of the spiritual affairs of the British who live there. They are very God-fearing, but they despise the local native settlers. Haha.

I think the story is good; it covers that brutal period when various Maori tribes were killing each other. In wars. Something that suited the British Empire, which leased those lands, but if they were left to kill each other, it was for the best; in the end, few would remain, weakened, and the British Empire could then annihilate the few survivors. Divide and conquer is a great strategy. I read a while ago that this period was known as the Musket Wars because the Maori tribes used firearms they bought from English traders.

Thomas Munro seems like an almost divine man, with good intentions. Upon meeting him, he gives the impression that he detests violence and war, but everything has a reason; something that will be revealed over time, as he is a man with a past seeking redemption.

There are several elements that make the story interesting, but in the end, I feel it was missing something. There was a touch of epic grandeur in the narrative. Of course, there is war and death, and they are shown without fear, but at the same time, I feel there are flaws in the film's pacing that prevent it from reaching its full potential. I think perhaps the filmmaker had his own difficulties making his last film; he was over 70 years old and suffered from Parkinson's disease, which ultimately caused his death two years later.

While it might not be as polished a film as I expected, I think it's worth watching if you enjoy historical dramas and want to learn more about that historical period in that country. For those of us from Latin America, seeing the haka might seem a bit strange, but we must understand that it's part of another ancestral culture, and in the film, we see the tribes performing it.

En los años 90, cuando solía ir los sábados al Club de Cine Charles Chapin de mi ciudad, vi una película que me marcó profundamente. Era una película cruda y dura. Se llamaba Once Were Warriors, y fue la primera vez que vi una película del director Lee Tamahori, quien lamentablemente falleció el año pasado.

El cineasta era neozelandés y de ascendencia maorí por parte de uno de sus padres. A lo largo de su carrera, realizó otras producciones que me gustaron, como Mulholland Falls y la miniserie sobre Hussein, The Devil's Double. También incursionó en el cine de acción, como XXX, e incluso dirigió una película de James Bond con Pierce Bronan. Por cierto, nunca me gustó Bronan como el Agente 007.

Creo que, desde su ópera prima, Lee Tamahori nunca me impresionó realmente con ninguna otra película. Creo que, además de ser su mejor trabajo, es insuperable. Sigo pensando lo mismo después de ver su última película, The Convert. Es de 2023 y la tenía en mi lista de películas pendientes desde entonces. Quería verla porque el director, una vez más, contaba una historia ambientada en Nueva Zelanda. Recuerdo haber visto algunas críticas positivas en redes sociales cuando se estrenó.

Esta vez, la historia se desarrolla en el siglo XIX, así que es un drama histórico que aborda la historia de una zona y un período específicos. La trama transcurre en un asentamiento británico ficticio llamado Epworth. El predicador Thomas Munro llega a este asentamiento para hacerse cargo de los asuntos espirituales de los británicos que viven allí. Son muy temerosos de Dios, pero desprecian a los colonos nativos del lugar. Jajaja

Creo que la historia es buena; abarca ese período brutal en el que varias tribus maoríes se mataban entre sí. En guerra. Algo que le convenía al Imperio Británico, que arrendaba esas tierras, pero si los dejaban matarse entre ellos, era lo mejor; al final, quedarían pocos, debilitados, y el Imperio Británico podría entonces aniquilar a los pocos supervivientes. Divide y vencerás, es una gran estrategia. Leí hace tiempo que este periodo se conocía como las Guerras de los Mosquetes porque las tribus maoríes usaban armas de fuego que compraban a comerciantes ingleses.

Thomas Munro parece un hombre casi divino, con buenas intenciones. Al conocerlo, da la impresión de que detesta la violencia y la guerra, pero todo tiene un motivo; algo que se revelará con el tiempo, pues es un hombre con un pasado que busca redención.

Hay varios elementos que hacen que la historia sea interesante, pero al final, siento que le faltaba algo. Había un toque de grandeza épica en la narrativa. Claro que hay guerra y muerte, y se muestran sin miedo, pero al mismo tiempo, siento que hay fallos en el ritmo de la película que le impiden alcanzar todo su potencial. Creo que quizás el cineasta tuvo sus propias dificultades al hacer su última película; tenía más de 70 años y sufría de Parkinson, enfermedad que finalmente le causó la muerte dos años después.

Aunque tal vez no sea una película tan pulida como esperaba, creo que vale la pena verla si disfrutas de los dramas históricos y quieres aprender más sobre ese período histórico en ese país. Para quienes somos de Latinoamérica, ver el haka puede parecer un poco extraño, pero debemos entender que forma parte de otra cultura ancestral, y en la película veremos a las tribus interpretándolo.
