To escape a dull life
To begin, I'll tell you right off the bat that it's quite a dense film. I've recently watched several Greek films (Animal and A Bast), and I've found them all rather difficult to digest. If you're looking for entertainment, well, no, this isn't a film that will entertain or amuse you.
That doesn't make it a bad film, however; you simply have to adapt to the type of film it is and watch it at the right time, when your brain craves something different from what you usually see. I don't recommend watching it at night, because you might fall asleep within minutes. As I mentioned, it's not because the story is bad, but because of the film's pacing and style.
The routine of daily life, that great evil that causes so much harm to most people. The world isn't like it appears on social media, where everyone seems to live adventures, luxuries, and absolute happiness every day. The life of the average citizen is quite monotonous. In the end, we are not the center of the universe.
This film was the first feature film by Cypriot filmmaker Tonia Mishiali. By the way, I've noticed I'm watching a lot of films that deal with female dramas. Just so you know, I'm 100% feminist. I love women. So don't label me sexist just because I'm right-wing. On the contrary, I love watching films with very feminine stories, to see if I can one day understand the female mind.
The film deals with the life of Elpida, a woman approaching menopause. She's probably been married her whole life to a man who practically ignores her. The guy is a pig: fat, old, ugly, and vulgar. When I saw him, he reminded me of the typical truck driver from my country. Those men who let themselves go and end up with a big belly. The husband just works, comes home, eats like a pig, and then watches football.
Elpida is unhappy; you can see it just by looking at her face. A miserable life, like so many others, even if you delude yourself into thinking you're incredibly happy with your wife or husband. There are many marriages like the one in the film, where unhappiness lurks in every corner of the home.
How can you escape that? For many, it's impossible. They will live like that, trapped in that depressing life for the rest of their days in this world. What's interesting about the film is the way Elpida enters her world, created by her imagination, with increasingly violent acts, provoking a sense of pleasure and even a touch of dark humor. All with a very Greek style, because I've seen films by different directors and they seem to use certain similar codes. I think many want to follow in their footsteps and be inspired by Yorgos Lanthimos's early films.
The main protagonist is the actress Stella Fyrogeni, who was 50 years old when she filmed this movie. The story follows her, and we can see her suffering, her frustration, and her pain trapped in a truly repugnant marital relationship. Her performance is excellent. I looked for more of his work, but he hasn't done much: a few short films and another feature called Patchwork, which I'll look for later.
It's a somewhat depressing film, so depending on your mood, you might like it or hate it. I think many people won't like it. Of the three Greek films I've seen, this is the one I'm going to recommend for now.
Let me know what you think in the comments.
驴C贸mo escapar de eso? Para muchos, es imposible. Vivir谩n as铆, atrapados en esa vida deprimente por el resto de sus d铆as en este mundo.
