Pablo was an eleven year old boy, he lived in one of the mountains of the Venezuelan Andes with his father and got up very early to go to work. He never knew his mother, according to what he heard once from his grandmother, she died in childbirth. He did not dare to ask, because the few times he did, he did not receive a clear answer. Along with his father, he worked at the San Cristobal market, helping to unload fruits and vegetables brought from the surrounding villages. Every morning he left his humble little house to start a wonderful day, he always smiled, never looked sad and was very popular, the ladies were very fond of him. His grandmother did not like so much affection and appreciation shown to the boy, she always complained to Pablo's father to keep him away from those daughters of the bad life, she did not want them to get close to her beloved grandson.
-You are special, don't let those witches touch you! - she told him every day.
His grandmother was very fond of him, she expected Pablo to bring her money to buy food. Pablo dreamed of traveling to Caracas, the capital, he had only seen it in newspaper clippings, since he was very young a friend who worked in the square told him stories related to the Venezuelan capital, this had awakened his interest but he found it increasingly difficult and saw it impossible to carry out that dream. In addition to working part-time at the market, he had to take care of his father's dairy goats. It was something from which they earned other income.
The boy Pablo was also very curious and naughty, he kept under his bed a magazine he found near the square, it was a magazine with naked women and with it he had his first sexual awakening. Once he saw the goats eating, he noticed their hind parts and it reminded him of the stories he heard of the young men who gathered in the square to eat chimo and drink miche, he heard the stories of how they lost their virginity with a donkey and others with a goat.
One day he could not stand it and took one of the goats for a walk. He walked for a long time until he came to a cave. He remembered that his grandmother had told him not to go too far from the house, but his curiosity was tremendous. He entered the cave with his goat and ventured out to do everything he had heard from the young men in the square. From that moment on, there was not a day when Pablo did not take the goats out for a walk.
Now the young man strutted with the boys in the square, he was already like them, a real man, every day he told them about his experiences with the goats.
-Pablo! - an old woman called to him.
-At your orders, ma'am. - He answered her with joy.
-Give me those camburs you have for sale.... they look very good.... here.... Keep the change. ... you're an old man....
Pablo took the money that the old woman gave him, it was a larger sum than the cost of the camburs, besides there was also a strange coin, a gold coin that he had never seen before and in the center it had a snake.
-Give my regards to your grandmother, tell her that Doña Simona sent them to her. - The old woman said goodbye with a big smile, showing her yellowish teeth.
When she arrived home, she told everything to her grandmother and she was furious, took the money, left the house and lit a fire throwing everything into the fire. She ordered the boy to lock himself in the house, started arguing with Pablo's father. - I told you not to take him to work with you mijo! - said his grandmother with tears in her eyes. -Calm down mom- was the only thing Amador, Pablo's father, said. Before night fell the young man went to where they had lit the bonfire and saw the gold coin, it was intact, he took it and hid it in his room, next to his beloved magazine.
He had not finished sleeping when suddenly he was awakened by strange noises coming from the roof of the house, it sounded like chickens walking. Amador got up, grabbed a machete and went outside, but he couldn't see anything in the darkness.
-It's those malparías! - exclaimed the grandmother with concern - Malparías! The witches!
Pablo was frightened, he had never seen his grandmother like that. She grabbed him and hugged him tightly. Pablo's father went up to the roof and a machete shot was heard. Amador arrived with some pieces of black feathers in his hand and told them he had managed to chase them away. They were lost in the darkness. The old woman hugged Pablito more tightly, who could not find an explanation for what had happened.
He couldn't sleep very well, but he felt happy and eager to go to work, his father stopped him and told him that today they would not go to the market and would stay at home to take care of the goats. Although he wanted to go to the square, he didn't mind the idea, he could spend more time with the goats. When they opened the door they saw an old woman walking home. Pablo recognized her by the yellowish teeth she showed with her smile, it was Doña Simona.
-Get out of my house, you wretch! - shouted Pablo's grandmother from the back of the house. -go away, I'm going to run you out! Take that witch away, you son of a bitch! - she shouted at the same time she threw salt at him.
-Josefa, my friend, the time is near! You can't help it... you can't fight against destiny... you don't own it! it doesn't belong to you! It doesn't belong to you! It belongs to us. - The old woman picked up some salt that fell on her clothes and tasted it -Thank you for the salt!
The old woman turned and left the way she had come. Amador ducked his head and went into the house. Josefa hugged her grandson again and began to cry.
-Promise me that you'll never leave, mijo. .
-I promise you, grandmother, that I will never leave you, that I will always be with you- said Pablo. -

No podrás evitarlo. . . no puedes luchar contra el destino. . . ¡No te pertenece!¡Es nuestro!
-Te lo prometo abuela, nunca te voy a dejar, siempre estaré contigo. – le dijo Pablo.
