An empty absurdity
Stay completely away from this movie. That's the first thing I'm going to tell you. Unlike most of my film reviews, this isn't a recommendation. And this is coming from someone who likes Nicolas Winding Refn's productions, but I also have to admit that everything has its limits.
You have to know when to say "Enough!" As much as I like the aesthetic of NWR's earlier productions, although my favorite films were his first ones, before he'd succumbed to this neon-lit, dead-time madness. I think Refn must have some kind of fetish for neon; it must give him some kind of pleasure, which is why he keeps overdoing it and has reached this point where there's nothing more to add.
I even quite liked this director's two (cancelled) series: Too Old to Die Young and Copenhagen Cowboy. Both series overuse neon, those pause moments where you can make yourself a sandwich, go to the bathroom, grab a coffee, and then sit back and watch, arriving just in time for the other character to speak. That's this filmmaker's style, which he's accentuated in every new production. But at least those series and films, like The Neon Demon, had an interesting story. A through line with some coherence within that universe.
But His Private Hell is just a succession of scenes that seem to parody the excess of neon. Sure, they're attractive, hypothetical, and fascinating images, worth seeing, but everything else is epic garbage. Nothing makes sense anymore. The dialogue is a complete mess, incoherence after incoherence. There's no sense in anything, beyond the fact that the filmmaker gives free rein to his imagination with things that seem fixed in his mind and that he repeats over and over again in his films.
When we say beautiful, we also mean the cast, made up of women who look like they just stepped out of a casting call for the cover of Vogue or a haute couture runway show. There's no room for ugly people. The only ugly person here is a fat man who looks like a pedophile and takes off his shirt to fight a guy who's killing people.
For me, this is the worst film in this director's entire filmography, and I firmly believe that even the most die-hard Refn fan will say it's not worth it. It's only suitable for someone who wants to fall asleep because of how tedious, pathetic, and absurd this succession of beautiful images with a nonexistent and completely empty story is. A total waste of time, so I want to do you a favor: don't waste your precious time and don't watch this garbage. I've already made the sacrifice for you. Don't say I didn't warn you.
Nicolas Winding Refn has produced excellent films; his career already places him in a select group, but he should reinvent himself, abandon his damn obsession, and do something interesting and new. Because that's precisely the problem: what he does isn't new, quite the opposite, and it seems outdated to me. It no longer has any impact. When he presented this film, the director told reporters that he had suffered a heart attack that left him clinically dead for over twenty minutes. I think he lost what little sanity he had left, and that's why he released this production that isn't worth watching.
I'm sorry, but this movie is a disaster. Don't watch it, but if you still ignore me and watch it, tell me what you think in the comments.
