[Movie] Double Blind

Imagine you mustn't close your eyes or fall asleep, because the consequences could be fatal. That's practically the premise of this interesting film I saw a while ago, but hadn't had the chance to recommend.

Corporations that control health through medications and drugs are constantly testing their new products to generate huge profits. It's very common that, in certain places where they have greater control, they use people as guinea pigs to test these products. All of this, of course, in exchange for money; nothing is free, and when the need is great, people accept money to test things on their bodies.

All of this is also explored in the film, where a highly selective drug trial on a group of men and women turns into a true nightmare. No one knows the side effects of certain new drugs, although they might be looking for the reaction they produce.

Although the film doesn't intend to denounce pharmaceutical companies or anything like that, the director leans towards psychological horror and how the need to avoid sleep drives the characters to a state of madness and paranoia. Overcoming sleep isn't easy; I'd say it's impossible. Have you ever tried not to sleep even when you're exhausted? You'll end up closing your eyes; it's inevitable.

That part is interesting and entertaining. A claustrophobic atmosphere, a group of people with different interests and ways of thinking. What could happen? Anything! Because we're human beings, and within all of us resides the instinct for survival and also violence as a resource. Yes, I know, I'm sure you're one of those people who say they wouldn't hurt a fly. You're lying. You're human, like me and like everyone reading this, and violence is part of our existence. Whether you like it or not. Even if you delude yourself into thinking you're a peaceful person.

This was the first feature film by Irish filmmaker Ian Hunt Duffy. He's also made a couple of short films, but curiously, after this feature, he hasn't directed anything else. I don't know what happened. I checked his social media, and he's only posted that the film is on Prime Video, but I didn't see any indication that he's working on other projects. Perhaps he's having difficulty securing funding. I think with this debut she did an acceptable job within the genre, so I hope that at some point in her life she manages to complete another project.

The film stars the beautiful actress Millie Brady. She has worked on several series, but has not yet established herself as a major star. She is a British actress, so she is not very well known in this part of the Spanish-speaking world. She is currently working on a production about the life of Colonel Lee Shaw, which will be released next year.

Her role in the film, of course, is that of the girl who runs, fights, tries to save others, screams, and gets covered in blood. In these types of productions, it is typical for the female protagonist to go through hell, hoping to survive, although here she will have a very difficult time. Not only does she have to save herself from her companions, who are falling into despair, but she also has to avoid insomnia, or it will all be over.

A group of people in extreme situations in an isolated space is a formula that works, and here, despite its clichés and familiar tropes, the story works.

Imagina que no debes cerrar los ojos ni quedarte dormido, porque las consecuencias podrían ser fatales. Esa es prácticamente la premisa de esta interesante película que vi hace tiempo, pero que no había tenido la oportunidad de recomendar.

Las corporaciones que controlan la salud mediante medicamentos y fármacos están constantemente probando sus nuevos productos para generar grandes ganancias. Es muy común que, en ciertos lugares donde tienen mayor control, utilicen a personas como conejillos de indias para probar estos productos. Todo esto, por supuesto, a cambio de dinero; nada es gratis, y cuando la necesidad es grande, la gente acepta dinero para probar cosas en sus cuerpos.

Todo esto también se explora en la película, donde una prueba altamente selectiva de un fármaco en un grupo de hombres y mujeres se convierte en un verdadero infierno. Nadie conoce los efectos secundarios de ciertos fármacos nuevos, aunque quizás estén buscando la reacción que se produce.

Aunque la película no pretende denunciar a las farmacéuticas ni nada por el estilo, el director se inclina hacia el terror psicológico y cómo la necesidad de evitar dormir lleva a los personajes a un estado de locura y paranoia. Superar el sueño no es fácil; diría que es imposible. ¿Alguna vez has intentado no dormir incluso estando muy cansado? Acabarás cerrando los ojos; es algo inevitable.

Esa parte resulta interesante y entretenida. Una atmósfera claustrofóbica, un grupo de personas con intereses y formas de pensar diferentes. ¿Qué puede pasar? ¡Todo! Porque somos seres humanos, y dentro de todos nosotros reside el instinto de supervivencia y también la violencia como recurso. Sí, lo sé, seguro que eres de los que dicen que no matarían ni una mosca. Mientes. Eres humano, como yo y como todos los que leen esto, y la violencia forma parte de nuestra existencia. Te guste o no. Incluso si te engañas pensando que eres una persona pacífica.

Esta fue la primera película del cineasta irlandés Ian Hunt Duffy. También ha realizado un par de cortometrajes, pero curiosamente, después de esta película, no ha dirigido ninguna otra. No sé qué ha pasado. Revisé sus redes sociales y solo ha publicado que la película está en Prime Video, pero no vi ninguna señal de que esté trabajando en otros proyectos. Quizás tenga dificultades para conseguir financiación. Creo que con este debut hizo un trabajo aceptable dentro del género, así que espero que en algún momento de su vida logre realizar otro proyecto.

No solo tiene que salvarse de sus compañeros, que caen en la desesperación, sino que también tiene que evitar el insomnio, o todo terminará.

Un grupo de personas en situaciones extremas dentro de un espacio aislado es una fórmula que funciona, y aquí, a pesar de sus clichés y tópicos conocidos, la historia funciona.
